911 Engine drop "party" Saturday 2/20 in Escondido

Postby efhughes3 on Sat Feb 06, 2010 1:57 pm

If anyone is interested, I'm dropping the engine from my '84 911 this date. Not looking to put people to work, but if someone is interested in seeing an engine drop, come on by. Or just hang out. I've a 37" high def TV, satellite radio, etc, etc in the garage. Probably starting at 9:00am. I've got a lift in the garage too, so this is pretty painless. No car rear end pointing to the moon on jackstands and balancing act with the engine on a floorjack! I'm putting Mahle 98mm Piston's (10.5:1 CR) and cylinders on the engine, and twin-plugging. My springtime project.

I'll have some donuts and coffee for the people there early. When done, beer and pizza. If you do plan on coming by, please let me know so I can get a head count for food/beverages and provide you with my info. My e-mail is efhughes3 (AT) att (DOT) net.

I'll be at the BMW AutoX, plus watching an engine pulled out using lifts etc is boring!

No doing it with jack stands and balancing and stuff, that's always interesting.

SO YOU STILL CAN RUN IN "IS" CLASS

sounds like fun.

You know, I really find the whole track thing in Calif screwy. The fact that we don't have straight DE's much is going against getting more new people to the track, IMO. Having said that, I know we're a bit removed from tracks down here in SD.

Maverick Region in DFW, TX ran several DE's through the year with great attendance. So did Hill Country and so did BMWCCA. You had at least one club DE a month it seems. I never heard anyone grumble that they weren't racing for TTOT. PCA in Dallas didn't even run Time Trials. AX, DE and Racing. It was all about track time and developing driver skill. Those who wanted to, could move on to Club Racing. A very solid track program with plenty of fresh faces in the slower groups.

My car is so penalized right now, I'm beyond caring where it gets pegged? I'm doing what I enjoy doing and like developing my car.

I'm off my soapbox now.

Ed -
Don't let the cheeky ones put you off (they are just being wise guys [takes one to know one  ]). Most of the folks who go to SDR's AX's and TT's are really friendly and low-key (and often downright helpful). There isn't a lot of "class consciousness" at the actual events. I would say the worst place for smack talk is on this board, and it isn't representative of the actual events. (Many of these guys haven't even been going to the track! ). Due to the cost of track events in Southern California (and trying to get enough participants to break even), all the track events tend to be TT's, but it's the same as a DE up until the end of Sunday, and a good number of the participants don't even stick around to run. There could be more in-town DE's, though...

Russell, thanks for the clarification, that does bring it into perspective for me, and I like what I'm hearing. So, with my new "GT3" or whatever it ends up doing, it sounds like I'll be able to just focus on some track time. I'm good with that and exhibit good manners and awareness on the track. I've had the pleasure of being on track with a Mr. P. Long and some Grand-am folks and never got in their way. Thanks again for explaining this to me.

The brakes, headers, cams, suspension, wheels, etc, etc already had me in IS.

POC is similar. When they "scored" my car, I was admonished that I should've been more careful when I built it or selected modifications. This is where I'd like to place a HUGE Smiley with rolling eyes.

Ed: with the engine increase you'll most likely land in IP:
Brakes: 2 pts ?
Headers: Free!
Cams: 4 pts. ?
suspension: 2 pts. ?
Tires: anywhere from 2 to 6 pts. ?
Engine displacement increase: 3 pts. ?

I'm guessing you'll wind up with somewhere around 15 to 17 points? If so, welcome to IP. I'll be there after the 3.6L :roflmao: :roflmao: is poked in my SC. So, you and I can "cat and mouse" at the DE's and TT's if you make them. :beerchug:

Should be a fun 2010, no? 8)

Now you're talkin'. For some REAL fun we can go chase the JP class guys/gals and see if they experience "SC envy." :roflmao:

Hmmm...

Ed, as an '84, it's not an SC. Car would be in JS or JP, not IS or IP. Maybe even class II if you accrued enough points (over 20).
Also, you take 5 points for compression ratio and twin-plug (III.F), and another 5 for camshafts (if you are changing those too).

Dan: Your 3.6 alone is worth 15 points (if it's a bone-stock 964 engine). That leaves you only 5 points remaining for any
other enhancements on the Pearl to stay in IP (wing = 2, suspension = 2+, tires = 2+) - good luck!
