Is my M2000 helmet that I have been using for PCA auto-x events acceptable at the Fontana DE? Looking forward to being there! :o

Section XIII - 3
Around Page 32 on my PC

Basically, it is OK until the end of this year.

If you are in an improved or above class, it would require a balaclava.

YMMV

From the rules booklet:
C. All car occupants must wear a Snell approved helmet, which has the current available Snell rating or the one previous Snell rating.

So this means that M2000 healmets are no longer legal because M2010 helmets have been out for several months making them two previous ratings from current and not allowed.

At the tech session on rules at C2 Motorsports, when the question was asked, Tom Brown replied that the "2000" helmets would be accepted until the end of this year!

Tom - please comment as Steve and you are saying different things.

While the M2010 helmets are out, the SA2010 helmets will not be released until October.

It does not even seem logical that the minute that a new revision is released that the old one instantly becomes obsolete.

Because "Somebody" says it to be; even if it is Tom Brown that doesn't make it so.
The rule is clear, if Tom wants to make an exception to allow M2000 helmets it must be in print or electronic medium.
Here:
http://zone8.pca.org/rules/2010/Clarifi ... 202010.pdf

Don't expect a tech inspector to allow a helmet because you heard it from so and so...
That is not fair to the tech team.

Here is what the rules say about it:

V COMMON
A.
B. Unless otherwise stated in this document, no deviation in these rules will be allowed for any event in the Zone 8 series unless previously approved and published by the Rules Committee. Such publication shall be in hard copy or by electronic mailing (or both) to the region presidents.

This exception seems reasonable, and I am sure Tom will have something posted before you can say Snell...

:?: Now this is interesting, there will be no SA2010 on the market until October 2010 and every organization that I know allows the SA2000 until 12/31/2010. As for the Motorcycle helmet M2010, I have no idea.

If you race cars, I highly recommend that you to get a SA (Sport Automobile) or a FIA helmet when you buy a new one. The new SA2010s will be lighter and stronger and more expensive than the previous SA2000 and SA2005 but it will also expire in 10 years. The FIA Helmet is even stronger and made for openwheel racing, it has no expiration date just like a HANS, but they start at $2800 and up from there :D

As a friend from Stand21 told me, you only have one head

The SA certification is a bit of a money making machine. But on the other hand after 5 years a helmet isn't really all that new anymore and after 10 years they grow legs

It does seem to me that we should allow more time for people to transition to the new standard. Many people (myself included) were not aware that the M2010 helmets would be certified and available so far in advance of the SA2010 helmets. I had been telling people in tech that they had until the end of the year to update whether they had M2000 or SA2000 helmets, and only found out that the M2000 is obsolete now at the last event. I don't think we did a good enough job of informing people about the change to M helmets and shouldn't hold their feet to the fire immediately.

As far as I'm concerned things are good till the end of the year, just like we do with harnesses.

This isn't quite right either, AFAIK. I believe you should say "Modified class and above" not "Improved" class in this statement, Chuck. The rules say:
If it is a Snell M rated helmet and the occupant is required to wear a driving suit, then the occupant must also wear a nomex balaclava (headsock).
Then they state:
Time Trial and DE Entrants in all Modified and higher classes are required to wear approved driving suits, gloves, shoes and socks.
So Improved class does not require a fire suit, by my reading, and thus would not require a nomex hood w/a Snell M-certified helmet either.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.
