Where do old helmets go to die?

Postby tb911 on Sat May 22, 2010 11:52 am

Doing some spring cleaning and found my SA 95 helmet.......

Since so many more helmets will expire this year, made me wonder. Is the landfill the only option?

Mine become temporary mailbox ornaments to make my house easier to find when I host a street bike ride, then they go in the trash. I suppose someone with a twisted sense of humor (who me???) could make them into "gearhead approved" hanging flower pots.
When you pitch it in the trash, drill big holes in it or otherwise destroy it so someone doesn't "rescue" it thinking it's still a good helmet and use it.

If you have friends/neighbors with small kids, they make great toys. Just be sure to tell the parents it's no longer good and "just a toy". You'd be surprised how many kids enjoy a "racing" helmet as a toy.

Desert racers (amateur, weekend types) think there fine. Not concerned about out of date helmets or belts. Put them on Craigs List or eBay.
