PCA SDR - Tire Rack Street Survival school

Postby MikeD on Sat Jun 05, 2010 1:09 pm

Hello fellow PCA SDR members,

Last Oct. I posted a note about teen driving accidents and how I, and the club might be able to help.

http://forum.pcasdr.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=3652

A lot of you offered to help, and a number of people provided a lot of information. After tons of research and leg work I am very pleased to announce that your local PCA region is going to hold its first (of what I hope will become many) Tire Rack Street Survival school on September 11th, 2010 in Qualcomm's West parking lot. This club is known for giving back to the community in many different ways. This event will allow you to give back to the San Diego community using your passion for your cars and the skills and thrills of driving them. So a huge "Thank You" to the PCA SDR board for approving the school. As well as another "Thank You" to PCA National for laying the groundwork so that we can bring this school to San Diego Region.

Who Can Participate:
This event is put on by PCA SDR, but is open to anyone between the ages of 16 and 21 to be a student. A special announcement will be made here once registration is open so club members can get spots early if they want them. But expect the 30 student spaces to fill up quickly.

How You Can Help:
  • We will need at least 15 instructors. I know September is a big month for driving. And the Oct. PDS will be just a month away. But this is a very worthwhile cause, and you will get at least as much enjoyment out of this as you do helping for the PDS.*
  • We will be needing course workers. Cone shaggers, flaggers, gate keepers, etc. 10 or 15 should be sufficient, but more hands make light work, so the more the merrier.
  • This is a break-even event (hopefully). And as you know the West lot is not cheap. So if you know of a company or organization that might want to be involved as a sponsor, or would like to help financially, please let me or Jackie Corwin know.
  • Tire Rack is the title sponsor. So buying your racing rubber from them helps this program, not only in San Diego, but around the country.

For more information about the Tire Rack Street Survival school visit: http://streetsurvival.org

Thank you all for getting behind this program and making it happen!

* If you are not an official PCA SDR instructor you may still be able to help. If you have some Autocross experience and understand the basic principles taught at our PDS you might be qualified enough to instruct. Just send me an email and we can discuss it.

I'd be happy to help out in any capacity, Mike, instructing or grunt work, whatever is necessary. This is a worthy effort.

For years I've taught advertising, branding, and design to that exact age group... And driving is, at least, half as dangerous. So, count me in.

This is exactly the reason I first got involved with the club- so that my teenage son could learn driving skills in a safe, controlled environment. Unfortunately, I'll be out of town that weekend, but I will be speaking to a potential sponsor this week. Good luck with this. It breaks my heart every time I hear of another tragic accident- and that happens with appalling frequency.

Mike,

I will be happy to help out in any capacity needed. I work extensivily with teens and also travel as a speaker to that age group. Kari should be able to attend as well.

Hey All,

I just wanted to post an update on this event.

First, we've had a lot of instructors step up and volunteer to make this happen. And I thank you all very much for taking the time out to help these kids.

Next, the class itself is just about full. As of this morning there are only 6 spots available. So if you know of a teen that wanted to get into this school, have them register now or they may be put on the waiting list.

Next, we could still use some help with actually running the school. We could really use people to help keep the exercises moving smoothly, making sure students and instructors are hydrated, keeping traffic flowing, etc. So if don't want to instruct, you can still help out. Just let us know you're planning to be there by sending a quick email to streetsurvival@pcasdr.org

And finally, I want to publicly thank Panera Bread (http://panerabread.com) for giving us an awesome deal on food for this event, and the Law Offices of White and Bright (http://whiteandbright.com) for helping sponsor the event! Also, keep in mind this school would not be possible without the Tire Rack (http://tirerack.com)!

Again, thanks to all of you for helping make this event part of PCA SDR culture!
