Just for fun Quiz...pt.1

At the May AX I heard a lound thump from the front of the car. It didn't happen again so I figured that it was a piece of loose track kicking up under the car. Tuffy has been parked since and today I finally had a chance to take a peek and see if anything was amiss...

So...what do you think it was?

All very good guesses! And those were the first things I checked, well except for the motor mount (didnt think of that). Though there was no cone to be found there was a solid packing of dirt on top of the a-arm I cleaned out.

But none of thos things were the cause of the sound. So a hint It sounded like it came from the right front, and thats where the problem was.

Any more ideas?

Clunks are often associated with where the suspension meets the chassis. So: bushings for A ams, connection/ pick-up point bolts/nuts, strut top bushings, sway bar bushings, all mounting point connection hardware?

My car developed a bad clunk after being forced off at Fontana (in my 944). Turned out the front sway bar tower was ripped from the chassis when I hit the 'gators straight-on. Every time I turned left ... Thump! Look closely at all suspension-to-chassis contact points.

The rear mount from the right front A-arm is torn out of the floor/frame rail...
Specifically the two 10mm thread inserts.
How'd I do?

I don't know if it's eccentric, but it sure is feeble

Hey, I said "connection/ pick-up point bolts/nuts," ... I just diodn't say which ones.

Okay, so either A-arm pick-up point (rear, as Steve "'G' stands for Guru" says) or top of strut connection through strut tower opening. Last guess: those pesky 8mm bolts for he sway bar.

If it were my car (from when I actually worked on cars), it would probably have been a (pick one) wrench, screwdriver, hammer, beer, that I left under the hood...

Weird. I KNOW I hit submit with the answer but since I cant find it...

It turned out that the top of the right coil spring had come out of the top cup and was shifted over so that it nearly touched the shock. The tumping was the spring moving under various loads.
