Just for fun quiz...Pt. 2

Postby Mmagus on Fri Jun 11, 2010 10:46 am

So, there I was, with little to no real mechanic training, or skills, a garage with basic tool, socekts, wrenches, hammers, levels, moving blankets, tie downs, bungie cords, etc. But no specialized tools, yet I had it fixed in about 5 min...

How do ya think I did it? :burnout:

What? No baling wire guesses? :o

I knew that i needed to somehow compress the spring and after tossing out a couple of ideas (yes...even the bubblegum and huge hammer) I came up with this.

I noted that when the car was on the jack the spring was spaced about 2in. and when off the jack it was about a 1/4 in less. So I hooked a motrocycle tiedown strap near the top of the spring and the other end to a sturdy looking piece of subfarme metal inboard of the spring. Then I jacked it up letting the strap hold the pressure of the spring and gave the it a whack with my palm. Boinggggg, it slipped right into place. :beerchug:

Now what I really wonder is how it managed to get OUT in the first place? :| :?: :?

Nice work, "Faster Pastor Master Tech Mark" (wow, say that five times fast!) .

The real question is: "What do I need to do to prevent this from happening again?"  8)

I always thought that at full droop ( car on jack ) the spring should have some pressure on it ,stopping this from happening. Is this not the case?? I'm guessing you have aftermarket springs that would allow that to happen and then limiting straps would be the answer.
