Great news! It is the only thing I am willing to go to Walmart for. And I need oil...

It is also about the only thing I go there for. Also, they are one of the few that still carries 15W-50 at all and at a great price! :burnout:

I prefer the 15W-40 Turbo Diesel Truck oil for its higher ZDDP content :)
$21 is tough to beat! Of course around here they are always out...

There are very few things I get here as well, I had stopped by for some aphid treatment for my tomato plants and air scoops for front breaks (aka sturdy plastic funnels at $1.95 each) when I noticed it. I did, however, go in disguise, shorts, flip flops, and an Elvis is king tee shirt, plus I drove the Jeep. :roflmao:

That's not a disguise Mr. Bray. Sounds more like a standard WalMart issue uniform!

thats called blending in. of course to really blend at walmart you need a shopping cart with a plethora of rugrats, tight nylon shorts, a colored tank top with contrasting color bra straps, and a single pair of shoes among the horde.

Yup, 5W-40, my bad. I'm used to the 15W-40 stuff for my real diesels

Here is link to the latest on Mobil 1 oils as far as ZDDP (Zinc dialkyldithiophosphates), etc. Note there are now two Mobil 1 racing oils (a 0W-50 is now available as well not shown in chart) that have a whopping 1750 PPM of phosphorus.

Bob,
I have been using Mobil 1 15-50 and ADDING ZDDP+ to boost the ZDDP. After looking at the chart you reference, it appears that I DON'T need to be adding any.
Do you know what level of ZDDP most Porsche type flat tappet engines require? I do know that above a certain level, it doesn't add any more protection, but I don't know what that level is.

The main issue with ZDDP is contamination of the catalytic converter by phosphates, so oil companies lowered the levels a few years ago.

Note in the chart that the Mobil 1 0W-40 and 5W-50 oils are recommended specifically for Porsche engines by both the Porsche factory and Exxon/Mobil.

Note that these for Porsche recommended oils have a higher than normal ZDDP at 1000 PPM, compared to 800 PPM for most catalytic converter approved oils. Porsche's come with high quality metallic bed Cats that I think tolerate higher levels of ZDDP than say a car with a ceramic bed Cat.

So, I suspect 1000 PPM is the lower limit for a P car.

I have had good luck with Mobil 1 15-50 which has 1200 PPM with no added phosphates judging from engines I have taken apart.

If you go to the Mobil 1 site again and drill around, there is a FAQ about racing oils that is interesting.

Thanks for the info!

I forgot to mention that I am running OLD 944 motors. So, I probably need a little higher ZDDP than the newer 911 motors.
My Blackstone Labs Oil Analysis have been coming back with approx 1500 / 1200 (Zinc / Phosphorus) using the additive which is above the 15/50 when new and approaching the M1 Racing oils when new. So, with 5 years of hard use on the Spec car and almost 3 on the Turbo with no bearing problems (Oil Analysis says they are still in great condition), I guess it is working!
