1973 Starlight (Monte Carlo) Rally

Postby lbevins on Tue Jul 06, 2010 12:58 pm

I co-drove a 1970 911s in the 1973 Starlight Rally. Just checking to see if anyone else, in the club, ever participated in that event... Especially the '73 event. Would love to see some photos or video. FYI : This was a 12 hour Monte Carlo style rally that ran every year from 1971 through, I believe, 2000. It was originally sponsored by the Santa Barbara City College Sports Car Club (SBCCSCC) which became the Santa Barbara Sports Car Club (SBSCC) around 1976. The route started, at 9:00 at night, in Santa Barbara and ended in Las Vegas, at 9:00 in the morning... Hence the name "Starlight". Fun times.

Hey Larry sounds like a great idea to rekindle? I've done my fair share of those 1k and 1.5k mile rallies in 24 hrs on motorcycles and think it would be great in a Porsche. Not a race but sometype of rally format?

There is a group that does this type of rally about every 3-4 months. They call themselves "In To The Night". I've done one and they do a really good job. http://www.itnrally.org

Ya. Apparently it's been re-packaged, by a group of clubs, under a different name... Now called "Stellar Luminescence" (you can Google it). Don't know much about it, but I think the main club behind it is the local, Santa Barbara, MIni Club. I think it caters to the Subaru/Mini/Honda croud... Nothing wrong with that. In fact I'm glad to see the younger guys out there being "car crazy" just like we were.

Having said that... It does bring up some possibilities. How about a yearly Monte Carlo Style 12 Hour Rally put on each year by PCA-SDR? I think I'm kidding... But, I'm not sure.

Cheers.

Larry you can count on me if you want to act on this interesting idea. I think it would be a natural for an yearly event for us.

Mike... Great stuff. Saw photos, of Bugeye Sprites (or Frogeyes as the Britts call them), on several of the sites... My first daily driver was a '59 Bugeye. Do you happen to know where the Motherload 400 ends? I couldn't find the answer on the website, and I used to live up in that area... Georgetown (between Placerville and Auburn), California to be specific. Thanks for sharing!

Here is a better link for the Mother Load 400.
http://www.motherlode400rally.com/index.html
It's based around the gold country, this year in a small city called Murphys.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=murphys+ca&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=30.875284,56.162109&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Murphys,+Calaveras,+California&ll=38.147518,-120.459595&spn=1.913647,3.510132&z=8
The Targa Ca has by far the most early 911 entries, almost 40 last year.
