Were you scared?

Postby Mmagus on Thu Sep 30, 2010 10:57 am

So...its October. Time to share scary stories! Post em!

This is a question that I have been asked at various times since joining the PCA. "Did that spin at Fontana with Paul scare you?" No, it was fun! "How was that lap with Jad in his fire-breathing Porsche...frightening?" Not really, but he sure runs a great line. "Did Mark R. give you a thrill as the slightly crazed speed freak during the instructors test?" Well, he frustrated me a bit by not listening to directions, but no...I wasn't scared.

I have sort of wondered why. Then it came to me today. After commuting to the office on my Triumph Sprint motorcycle on So Cal freeways, in a Driving Rainstorm, with LIGHTENING striking, while using my gloved finger as a wind/face-shield wiper...everything else is a bit...mild.

Made me think of the Billy Joel lyric- "even rode my motorcycle in the rain"

I've been stranded in the combat zone
I walked through Bedford Stuy alone
Even rode my motorcycle in the rain
And you told me not to drive
But I made it home alive
So you said that only proves that I'm insane

You may be right
I may be crazy
But it just may be a lunatic you're looking for
Turn out the light
Don't try to save me
You may be wrong for all I know
But you may be right

OK.., so last year running with NASA HPDE3 I was running my 924S Frankenstein, Flat out in NASCAR banked turn 2, Fontana. Was Running 2 Wide in the lower lanes with a M3 at 130ish. This C6 Vet takes us both from lane 3 (upper side) doing 165MPH (found out latter) passing us just before the track out and hard brake zone, going to 3. All went clean. Then next time I saw the vet it was smashed up in to the wall in the S turns (11-12) just before the complex turns. I found out latter that the Vet's front left wheel had separated the inner from outer stock cast wheel. The remain tire had shot off and nearly took out a corner worker at 50 MPH. Vet spun and crunched. If the Vet would of lost the wheel back in turn 2 there would of been three coffins. The Vet guy brought the inner wheel remains in to the Session Debrief 30 mins later and was so hot, he had to use cooking mitts.
