Some of you have been asking about the Data Acquisition program that I've been using on my iPhone. It's called Harry's Lap Timer and it's only available for the iPhone and Palm OS platforms. It works best on the iPHone 4. I believe that you'll need to connect to a GPS program like TomTom to use it with the iPhone 3S or Palm OS. I've been happy with it so far and at $13.99 it's a great deal. You can look at your laps on the phone along with a couple of charts and you can import the data into Dashware or Race Render to add overlays to your video. You can also export the data and look at it on Google Earth. I've included a snapshot of what the Google Earth map looks like at Spring Mt. So far, it's the best inexpensive program I've seen out there and I especially like that most of our TT tracks are already available to download for free.

+1 Harry's Lap Timer is one of the best iPhone app / lap timer and it works with 3G, 3GS and iPhone 4. The new release actually records video with data overlay to the phone. I used it on the 3GS without any issues, but the GPS is more accurate when used with the Tom Tom Car Kit (approx. $70 new on eBay). The TomTom car kit is the best car adapter for the iPhone, it provides a more accurate GPS, better speaker phone, audio aux and it charges the phone.

Can you just connect your iphone to a GPS (I have a Garmin) via a USB cable to get better accuracy?

Not sure, but I don't think so for USB and Garmin.
They are set up to use a Bluetooth GPS input however (or the internal GPS for the iPhone4).

I looked at the iphone apps but they will not yet shake hands with a high res. Bluetooth GPS receiver due to Apple proprietary BT issues The internal iphone GPS is 1Hz so it is good to about 1 second accuracy. 1 hz is certainly useful at the track but probably not AX.

Another excellent phone app laptimer/datalogger is Racechrono. It works with windows mobile and Nokia phones and It is compatible with a high resolution 10hz GPS receiver like this one: http://www.semsons.com/qsbt10blgpsr.html It is accurate to 1/10 of a second and position accuracy is usually better than 1 meter. So far the app software is freeware or you can buy their new stand alone 10hz GPS system with racechrono software for $500. I have been using this software since April with good results. Comparing recent laps with your best lap vividly displays where you made progress or left time on the clock.

This app seemed like a pretty inexpensive way to get some cool video. So I played around with it a little today and capture the following video during that last run session at Chuckwalla this afternoon.

Just thought that I would add a link for the Android powered phones. I'm using one called Trackmaster and it can use the on board gps at about 1 sample per second or connect to a higher res Bluetooth gps (5hz for sure and I may try out a 10hz model soon).

It also has great export options and the developer is very active on the site forums.

I've used this Droid app all year during the time trial series and is a great app accurate to about .2 sec. as compared to the transponder.

Anybody want to buy a Hot lap plus transmitter?

have any of you figured out how to set the trigger points and use the app for a typical AX track?

Craig I believe I have and will be testing it on Sunday. You simply need to mark a PIO at the start and the finish during the track walk and it will do the rest.

BTW The Harry's Lap Timer Pro (iPhone + TomTom car kit) worked incredibly well and I think it's definitely worth buying. It's only off by 1 to 3 tenths of a second, but that's about the same as a Longacre Hotlap timer is too.

1) Create an Event (Click on the wrench)
2) Go to the Start line to set the (Go) trigger / POI and assign it to the new event
3) Go to the Finish line to set the (Stop) trigger / POI and assign it to the new event
4) Done, the rest is fully automatic for timing or video recording.

KML file export for Google Earth with G-Forces, Speeds.

This was without Tom Tom. Just the internal GPS.
