in-car lap timers

What are the current options for in-car lap timers? Do the tracks have transmitters that are compatible with some and not others? Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Hola Bill,

At the AX and TT events we have HotLap timers set up. I believe they onl work with the"old" version of the timers, though I could be wrong. I have an older one and it reads the timers at our events. Beyond that there are many choices. Lots of people are using their iPhones or Andriod Phones with timeing aps. The aps are fairly inexpensive ($40 or so) and have great accuracy. If you want to REALLY step up there are many Data loging systems such as Traqmate that map the track, tell speed, lap times, G Forces, tach revs, engine temps, overlay with video, change your tires, check the oil and wash the widows. (ok I added the last three)

The only limit is really your wallet.

Yes, the new GPS lap timers will do basic lap timing but also data logging, track sectors and analysis/comparison for dirt cheap. I use RaceChrono software in a PDA for a total investment of about $150. You can get a RaceChrono stand alone touchscreen timer/logger for $400-$500 here:

I highly recommend it.

I have a question for those in the know. According to the longacre website, the new receiver and display will work with the old transmitter system, does anyone have experience with that set up?

I would like to know before I pull the trigger on the new in car set up vs buying the old in car stuff.

Thanks,
Joel

Joel,

I had the new small longacre lap timer ordered and returned it after they told me it was not be compatible with the old system. :banghead: and now the new receivers work with the old transmitter.

Note on compatibility with older Hot Lap™ Systems: Older Hot Lap™ transmitters will work with new Hot Lap™ Lti™ systems. New Hot Lap™ Lti™ transmitters will NOT work with older Hot Lap™ systems.

Joel,

I had called Longacre a couple of months ago and was told that old and newer systems were not compatable. Now with Martin's post, I called them back again and was told that they have done some more testing and the old transmitters work with the new receiver/display units, BUT the new transmitters will not work with the old receiver/display units.

Looks like I will be getting a Hot Lap timer after all with this new news.

I picked up a version 2 Hot Lap receiver and tried it out at the last AX for the first time. I had a hard time getting the height right, but it did seem to pick up the old beacon, which is what I was told by Steve at C2 Motorsports.

By the way, for those who are Hot Lap experts, please check this post and help me get the set up right at AX:
