Anybody check times at Fontana?

Postby Dave Diamond on Sun Mar 13, 2011 8:53 pm

I know it wasn't a race, but did anybody check their times with a hot lap or other timer? I tried "Harry's lap timer pro" (iphone app) on Mark Rondeau's recommendation, and I wanted to see if what it recorded was in the ballpark. Not sure I had it set up correctly.
Thanks.

Dave,

I had my Hot Lap timer running and was in the low 1:19's. Street Stock 996 on street tires, class PSS or CC09 next year. I ran about a second faster last Oct with POC.

Dave,

I did 1:21's with passenger in a 986 with street tires and PS9's according to the Droid X and Race Ace app (free app that seems well worth the price  )

I was running consistent low 1:20's with my hot lap. Harry's showed 1:20's and high 1:19's.

OK, thanks all. I recorded 44 laps in 4 different run sessions, times ranging from hi 1:20's (or higher if I was pointing by several faster people or stuck behind a slower one) to a best of 1:19.53 in last run session. (In a stock 2002 986 with the same tires that Kim Crosser uses -- Dunlop Direzzas, 200 treadwear) This makes me think the timer was a little off, since it seems very unlikely that I am in the same league as Mark, Jad, or Greg (I don't think I know you, Greg).

I had the phone mounted at a 45-degree angle (maybe it's supposed to be vertical?), and I had set a trigger point just off the left side of the track near the bridge. I did hear it beep when I passed the point each time. Would the mounting angle or slightly off-track trigger point affect the accuracy? (Of course, I am perfectly happy to believe that I had some really good laps, but self-delusion never pays off in the long run.)

As Mark told me, the pre-programmed track map was for the big part-oval layout for Festival of Speed, it looks like, so I didn't use it. And obviously you must have to mount it vertically to record video of your laps. This was my first time trying it.

Thanks.

Dave,

Harry's Laptimer is least accurate with the iPhone 3Gs. It's better with the iPhone 4G and best when used in conjunction with the TomTom iPhone mount. The TomTom uses a faster GPS sampling rate. Due to my hectic schedule at the DE, I never had a chance to set up Harry's for the infield. It is fun to use and can give you some good information. I'll be trying it again when we run the Roval in April.

The line you took could save significant time as well :? . Some people felt the chicane after corner nine could be ignored and went completely to the left of the burm, completely off the "track", same for the right turn after the playground and right turn with the 'cone' that joined back on between corners 5-6. Skipping those corners could easily improve your time by 2-3 seconds, and I know Mark and I took the actual track line as much as possible, but sounds to me like you at least had a pretty good time with a few sources of minor variations. :beerchug:

1:15:35 was my single golden lap on the big RA-1's.
Most others were mid low 1:16's...

Obviously not in that video though.

For those of you with short attention spans you might want to fast forward to 2:20...
And watch the next 10 seconds over and over.
Seems like Jad was just trying to stay in frame.
Nice work; but you might want to keep those rear pressures below 50 psi next time. :roflmao:

Did you not wait for the end video credits?

Nice to see you add some flair to your normally sterile driving style.
You are almost ready for a torsion bar 911!
