The first is Rolling Thunder. A DE, Time Trial, and Club Race at Buttonwillow co hosted by PCA-GPX and PCA-GGR over Memorial Day weekend. Lets show those NorCal drivers who's got the right stuff. ** Very significant discounts for qualified instructors!**

The second is a DE and Autocross on the historic track at Fairplex Pomona June 25-26. Two days of performance driving for only $160. This event will sell out quickly:

Interesting, it's only $190(sat/sun) or $125(sat) for instructors ...
They do charge students an extra $50 though

They charge anyone who does not instruct $340. (Sat/Sun)
But when you instruct with these guys you work for the money.
Very different from our events.

Yes. With PCA-GGR the students effectively subsidize their instructors for each day and the instructors do work for it, including instructor briefings, in car instruction, and written evaluations. It is an interesting program that does have some merit.

The ggr event is a very good event just different from ours. Part of the reason we went last year was to scout it out for improvements in our own new DE program. We came away with some good ideas that we are currently using in our 2011 DE school.

O.K., we'll bite. DE Track map? Direction? How many DE run groups and how many sessions?

Hey Russell, missed you at BW.

This thread shows a google photo of the track:

The dark outline is the historic racetrack for the DE, and the yellow is pretty close to the planned AX course on Sunday. Both will run CCW. I expect 4 run groups and 5x20 min sessions on Saturday with final plans depending on car count. It should be fun and a lot of seat time per dollar. :beerchug:

Dave,

So we are not going to be running under the bridge this time? Did we lose our privilege? I really liked that section after the bridge!

The bridge is in for Sat. and out for Sun. as of the latest report. I like it too with an interesting off camber exit. The course is guaranteed to be a lot dryer this weekend. :burnout:

The word is PCNA will be in town again and is bringing out a few cars.

Excellent, thanks for the info. I hope I get to mix it up with the PCNA drivers again, that was fun!

One note on the safety of the track this time around near the bridge...I know you help coordinate this event on some level and know the different chair persons...please make sure that the track safety chair is very clear/strict with the corner workers that they are to put the cones back exactly where intended...I suggest marking clearly with chalk (last time the rain made that pretty hard). As the day went on the "speed check" section got faster and faster and in my opinion was a large contributing factor to the accident. Okay, my safety rant is over...see you guys there!!!

Yes, our driving team is all over it. Back in Nov. we were saddled with the third string Willow corner worker crew who were not used to picking up cones and were totally unprepared for the heavy weather. We bought them all ponchos but it was still a mess and they were pretty ineffective with 1" of rain falling. It was also our 1st DE at Fairplex and we learned a lot about layout and controlling the track. Our long time CDI Mike Mulligan will be setting the track with safety as top priority. We have some very "special" cones for key apexes and safety areas that no one will be hitting  . The pits will also be moved way back from the track to create more of a buffer since there is no hot pit wall. Our corner worker team is the "A" team from Long Beach who run VARA, SCCA, PCA-FOS, INDY/ALMS- Long Beach Grand Prix, and racing events throughout SoCal and they are excellent. Black flags will be frequently given for cone killers during the DE. Multiple Black flags for course violations= end of session. Overall I think this is a very safe venue with huge asphalt runoff areas and really only one place to hit stuff "entering The Tunnel". It also happens to be the most fun and unique part of the track.

Good judgement applies at every DE where there are safe places to explore "pushing it" and places to you need to keep it reeled in. Just ask the 3 guys who wadded up their cars in turn #4 during the first session at PCA Coronado Speedfest in 2009. Rule #1: Just don't hit stuff. Always remember it is a PCA Driver Education event. Penske and Ganassi will not be scouting for hot shoe drivers from the grandstands and the only trophy is bringing your car home in one piece at the end of the day.

See ya in the tunnel...

After looking at the map is why I asked if we lost our privilege to run the tunnel because it is not included in the line on that map. The tunnel is on the very bottom of the map...you can see a little paved road go over the "bridge" and you drive under that. It's not that long of a tunnel but the sound of the car is awesome...I was hitting high RPMs in second last time so it sounded sweet!
