Question to Big Track Instructors

Postby JivenJim on Sun May 29, 2011 6:28 am

I have been asked if I would like to/should Drive Student Cars at Big Track events. I have reluctantly declined every offer. I know the students want to feel what it is like to ride with a more experienced driver in their own car. I would love to drive some of these newer beasts... I generally say, I would love to but, this is not the cone zone and things can happen. So regretfully decline, and always let them ride in my car.

I would be pressed $$ to pay to repaint a scratch let alone if something happens. I know that I am safe and competent driver but am I being chicken stu#$ff or ???

I want to be a better instructor and driver. I also want to drive and learn other cars better. What do you guys/gals do?

I drive WAY within my limits and be very careful as the fast cars can get away from you quickly if you are not use to the speed. But follow the line, and drive at 80% and you should give them a pretty good idea of how things should be done as it seems 20% faster from the passenger seat. Some tracks are much easier to instruct at, like Pahrump, whereas Big Willow is mostly about pushing the limits and much harder to demonstrate :surr:

That is how I do it, others have different approaches.

Thank you very much for sharing this Jad. You are a racing hero of mine, and very much value your input.
FYI, the video’s of you lapping me at Cal Speedway this year was the best/most fun I have enjoyed watching.

I would also welcome other Instructors input.

Thanks,

I've driven most of my students cars at TT and DE's this year. Keep it at 75-80% and keep in mind that it's not your car, it's probably on street tires and your student may not be ready for his car to go fast. I try to drive during the 4th or 5th session and only for 2-3 laps. I find that the student has the basic track down by then and this really helps them dial in the correct line. You should see a noticeable improvement in your student as soon as they get back in the drivers seat.

This is what seems to work for me.

Having Mark jump into the left seat was extremely helpful for me as a student. Once he drew out the line, I was able to mimic that and improve dramatically.
