Changing AX Student Requirements

Hey, since it looks like the board may vote on changing standing rules, or possible bylaws changes in the future, how about changing AX Student requirements?

I'm taking this from the X-Cars thread since it is a little off the subject.

To muddy the waters, whatever you (CDIs and AX chairs) decide it would be nice if you told the pre reg folks who do the actual pairings. Or will the CDIs like to attend pre reg and do the pairings? Since we are doing them tonight?
Thanks,

Jackie,
The CDI's are requesting that prereg assign available PCA SDR instructors to PCA members in good standing first and non PCA member x car drivers second. If you need help with that let us know and we will be happy to assist.
Cheers,

We're doing the pairings tonight for the July 2 AX and I thought I'd throw out a couple of ideas depending on whatever happens with non-PCA Members becoming Instructors in the future, plus this will relieve some burden on our Member Instructors.

Don't bite my head off guys. Just some more ideas...and not sure this requirement can be changed.

1. Change All Student requirements to 3 AXs with an Instructor. Last Instructor tells CDI their student is safe and not a maniacal driver and then CDI or last Instructor requires student to complete a quick written test of safety items; such as both feet in, drive straight off, no passengers, arms inside, corner working items, etc. Perhaps a small log book for the Instructor to comment in would be a good idea. (Heck, we could charge for the small log book and put that towards an AX lunch one day or snacks)

2. If student wants an Instructor after 3 times and meeting standards, and an Instructor is available/willing, charge them an extra $10 and put that money into a future AX lunch, or snacks. Or we could credit the Instructor $10 towards the AX, but we've been down that path before. I think we could get a few Instructors that are more willing to instruct if their AX fee is lowered.

Yes, it is involves a bit more organization and auditing.

What do you think? Should we just leave well enough alone?

I think that 4 events with an instructor is plenty for a driver to go solo. If you don't get it by then, you're not paying attention. With the new rules, any 4 days should count. PDS (2), AX, or DE (credit for each day). If a driver goes to the PDS and and a two day DE, for example, they should be good to solo at an AX. If not, there's plenty of golf courses in San Diego.

There are some drivers in the club with upwards of 20 AX events that request instructors and instructors that request to be with them. I think that's an imposition on our instructor corp. If an experienced driver really wants to improve, he/she should try the following:

1) Strive to become an instructor. You don't have to be fast to teach the basics.

2) Find as many different fast drivers/instructors to ride with as possible. It's amazing how much you can learn by driving with or riding with different people. Don't limit yourself to people with the same cars. If you drive a 911, jump into a Boxster or a 944. You just might learn something new.

3) Step up to DE/TT events. You learn so much more with continuous lapping. You'll get an AX worth of driving every session. Learn car control at Qualcomm and master smoothness at the track.

That's my .02 cents. YMMV.
