Anybody up for a Dyno Day?

First off, the disclaimer-- unless the tech session team wants to jump in, get board approval, and help organize it, this would not be an official PCA-SDR sanctioned event.

That said, I am interested in getting my car dyno-tested before the next season starts, and I am guessing that there might be a few other people interested in doing that as well, considering the new rule set. Being a broke-a$$ retired guy, I am also interested in saving money wherever I can. I have been talking to the Dyno Shop out in Santee (where we have had tech sessions in the past) about what it would cost to get my car on their Dynojet for a measurement. The best price they can quote me right now is $90 for a Saturday appointment for 3 consecutive pulls to get an average measurement according to our new requirements. This is if I go there alone. Depending on how many other people I could round up for the same thing on a given Saturday, we could get a group discount to lower that price for everybody. I have attended some Dyno Days in the past out there which were open to the public, and they did the same sort of thing (with only two pulls, though) for as little as $50-60 per car. That was a long time ago now, and there were 25-30 people showing up for those events, but I'm hoping if we can get 10-15 people together we might be able to get the cost down to $75 ea. or so. There would be no tuning allowed or offered, and no parts-changing on the spot (to see which exhaust worked better on your car, etc.), just one car after another getting strapped down and measured, production-line style. Unfortunately, they do not have a 4WD dyno, so this would be for 2WD vehicles only.

The more people we got together, the cheaper it would be, so I thought I would try to drum up interest here. I am willing to make the arrangements, but we would need to decide on which weekend to do it. Looking at the calendar, there ain't any good choices between now and the first TT event on Jan. 7, especially with the holiday season upon us, so maybe it's not really feasible. Dec. 17 is the "other car AX", the next Sat. is Xmas eve, the next one is New Year's eve (and the big SD Auto Show event), so it looks like Jan. 14th may be the first opportunity to get many folks together on a Sat. If anyone is interested in doing this, please respond here, or if this thread is deemed inappropriate by the board of directors, contact me by email and we will take it all offline.

Thx,
TT

Count me in. I was planning to take my car to the Dyno Shop anyway. Even better with a discount.

Yes, sounds good, :beerchug:

You might want to link up with the tech sessions chairs also

The tech session chairs are jumping in on this deal and we should have an announcement soon regarding place/date/price. Jim Binford and Martin Lipp visited both JBA and the Dyno Shop this week and negotiated a lower price than I could!

Stay tuned to this thread for more info. You're going to like this!

What about scales? Don't we all need to weigh our cars as well?

Maybe we could get Ryan from RSR to drop by that day with his digital scales (I remember someone mentioned here before that he could also maybe bring them to an autox sometime), but lacking that, I usually just drive by Edco Recycling center at 6700 Federal Blvd. in Lemon Grove and get a weight on their truck scales. It's quick and easy and cheap.

OK, one final post on this thread with pointers to the official thread, now that the dyno day is an official PCA-SDR event. The date is set for Jan 14th, at JBA in Kearny Mesa.

Here's the link to sign up:
Motorsportsreg.com.
You won't be charged when signing up--this will be cash only, payable at the event. If you are dynoing your car to meet the rules requirement for next year, be sure to select the "3-pull" option, which will be $75. If you're just doing it to see how much power your car is making, the 2-pull run is only $60.

Here's the link to the new thread, started by the Tech Session Chair:

C'ya there!
