Qualcomm Stadium January 14 West Lot Repair "Party"

 It's been dubbed "PATCHAPALOOZA" Need 8-10 volunteers.

At the car club meeting at the stadium to set driving dates for next year it was brought up by the BMW Club that we should all get together again and patch up the west lot like we've done before. We've done it twice before but not last year. When prepped right some of the patching has held up well!

Saturday - January 14 was picked as the date to do this. Rain or shine. Start at 8AM and be done by 10 - 11 AM most likely.

Mark Bray is picking up the Corwin's cement mixer. :) We need a generator to run it. Does anyone have one that we can use?

We also need 2 "hurricane volume" commercial type air blowers. They are what make the patching hold up so well by blowing out all the loose dirt and bad asphalt. Anyone have these?

We also need a couple of wheelbarrows. Anyone have these?

I will get about 70 - 80 bags of fast setting cement. I have a couple of trowels and shovels. If you have some please bring.

I'd like to get a list of volunteers so if you can do this - let me know here in the forum or email me at.... behun@cox.net - or call me at 619-417-2124

There is a tech session at JBA on January 14th at 8:00am. Too bad that is the date that was chosen, hopefully it will not impact your crew too much. Sorry I cannot make it that day, I am sure I have other plans! :roflmao:

Thanks Bill for posing this! :beerchug:

I will bring cement working tools (trowels) and a square nosed shovel or two as well. If its at all possible, the wheelbarrows really need to be he large "contractor" size ones as the small "garden" style can give out with the weight of cement. We also need a water supply of some sort . I have no idea what the stadium has in that regard, and have not been to a patching party at the Q before.

Bill. do you know? can they supply us with hoses? orrr?

Than ks,

Mark

GOOD NEWS!

I just spoke with a friend of mine who has a major contracting company in San Diego. He has a full sized gas cement mixer, contractor wheelbarrows, shovels, finishing tools...and if the stadium doesn't have water readily available he said, "Let me know, I have a 2500 gallon water truck too."

Total cost to us...

Zero dollars!!

Awesome Mark! ...and thanks  Andrew for volunteering.
Angela - it was 3 car clubs to 1 for the date so the others ruled the date. Oh well.

Mark - your friends cement mixer and tools are great and that sets us up well. Thanks.

Does he have any commercial lawn blowers? It was amazing last time (the first time we used them) the air got under the crummy pavement and lifted large chunks out - when for some reason a shovel didn't. A deceptive small pothole turned into a big one and some went 16 inches deep! Those deep concrete repairs will stay for a LONG time.

The stadium has a maintenance yard (by the fire station) that they open to us and we can get water there. No need for the water truck - but wow, awesome.

Count me and Bret in. Would an air compressor with a long (2' copper tube) nozzle be of help in cleaning out the cracks?

Bill if you're still looking for a generator, I have one in my trailer that you can use. I can drop it off at the stadium. I can't join the party, however, due to dyno day.

Great job, all.

Not to throw a fly in the honey, but ... why use concrete on asphalt (poor bond w/ unlike materials) .... do all the mixing and troweling ... deal with wheel barrels, clean-up, etc. ... when you could get a couple of pick-up trucks, and a whole buncha cold-patch asphalt in bags?

Asphalt-to-asphalt is a better bond that flexes during compression, heating, and cooling (i.e: hot summer days with cool mornings, hot afternoons, and cars driving over it); has the same (or better) bonding capabilities as cement, has the same tire-grip coefficient as the current surface (as apposed to concrete ... that is an unlike material and has a different traction potential on tires), and asphalt is not prone to breaking and splintering into chunks as readily as concrete (unless you reinforce the concrete with steel bar).

I don't want to dissuade you all from the great effort your giving to repairing the pavement, but I've seen the previous patches (both concrete and cold-patch asphalt) and think that using like-materials will net you a faster repair, longer lasting results, and a smoother transition when driving over the patches. The current condition of the previous patching attempts bears this out.

Just a thought ... 8) Sorry I can't help, I'm booked.

Dan,

The discussion of materials has been done previously. There is no way that the clubs have the capabiity of patching using the same materials as the existing surface.

I will say as far as the concrete it is all about the surface preperation. Here are some sections of patch that have held up very well and others that have not.

I can say that the patches that BMW club did a few years ago are still holding very well compared to many of the others.

A major component in getting the best adhesion between the asphalt and concrete was to use concrete adhesive, which is painted into the entire whole prior to spreading out the concrete.

Baseed on our work last year when we had a mixer although it made the concrete much faster we could not prep the holes well or fast enough for the amount of concrete we could make with the mixer.

The final important part of the process is doing a very good job troweling the concrete into the corners of the holes. Its then important to get it all smooth. There are quite a few patches out there that were done very quickly that have either fallen apartor are so rough that you dont want to run a course over them.

MATTHEW - Thank you for responding to Dan's input. Last time we (Porsche Club) took the BMW advice and applied the adhesive like the BMW club did before. It surely didn't hurt to do this and we'll surely do it again. REALLY cleaning and blowing out the holes is crucial. The first year we did the best we could but it was clearly not enough. Last time we had the powerful leaf blowers and they really did the trick. We'll rent at least 2 of them.

We'll try to have more folks on prepping the holes this time yo try to stay ahead of the concrete mixer.

FRED - I'll see if Mark Bray (who's getting the mixer from his contractor friend) also needs the generator. The mixer may come with one. I'll let you know ASAP. :)

PHIL & BRET - Yes, bring the air compressor and tubing. I could work great and prepping is crucial so the more the better. Thanks!

One thing you learn while being a pastor especially early in your career is how to make a living doing other things. :roflmao: I worked my way through college and brought in extra income afterwards doing construction. Thank goodness those days are mainly behind me! It also gives me a bit of a handle on the process that we should perhaps follow. Matthew great thoughts, hopefully if we set the process well we wont run into as many hold ups and issues.

Who from PCA is coordinating your efforts?

I will organizing for BMWCCA, not sure who is coordinating for SCCA, but we should have an overall plan of action as too who is going to do what areas and who is prepared to do how much.

Last year BMW brought a Pallet of ready mix and a mixer. We are checking on availability of our mixer, but will probably bring about the same quantity this year.

I have not yet been to the lot to survey and determine where we would like to see fixed, but last I recall the back corner was getting bad again as was the middle of the hill. My recollection from previous Patchapaloozas was that both BMW and PCA had fairly coordinated efforts while the SCCA group was running around trying to quickly patch any little hole they saw.

I believe a plan of action for the problem areas is the best approach to gain the most useable ground back.

I agree COMPLETELY.

Thus far Bill Beehun has been near the hub of control central, so if he is willing to continue there I am good with that and I will help however I can. Bill? :beerchug: I spoke with him today concerning the project order and gave some suggestions as how things might flow most efficiently on the day of the job. Between the two of us I am certain we should keep things rolling long nicely.
