tire advice

Hi All

As a new comer to this game I was hoping to get some input into my next tire purchase.

I have an 87 924S with 6 inch wheels and currently running 205/60 tires......After my first year at AX the current tires are officially shot and Im in the market for some new ones.....what do you all think a good setup would be for a beginner who is still learning the craft, but having a great time doing it :beerchug:

I was thinking to get hold of some 7 inch wheels and maybe go to 225s on both front and rear....

Any input/advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

Ro

Are you using 15 or 16 (17?) inch wheels?

A good choice is the Hankook Ventus RS3, they come in 225/45/15 and 225/50/16
Dunlop Direzza Z1 and Bridgestone RE-11 are also good but more expensive.
Look on Tirerack.com for extreme performance summer tires

We have been very happy with the Falken 615K tires - we ran them on the Miata, and I just got a set for AX for the 997. I used them for the first time at the last AX, and was very happy - very good grip and they are very controllable as they release (slide). They are rated at 200 tread wear, so no tire softness points. Price isn't bad either.

Plus one on the Azenis 615K. I received good advice when those in the pits mentored me through the changes in tires, Azenis gave me significantly more grip while affording good predictibility on breakway, learning to drive them faster was an important lesson and paid big divedends for me when moving to the next set (NT-01s).
The Falkens got several days of weekend drives +15 ax days on them and were heat cycled out long before the tread was gone. Dont freak out if they feel loose at first the releasing compound takes half an AX day to scrub out.
Best of luck on your choices there are many. If it matters I used the Falkens on a 914 which is of course light you may have a different experience with a heaiver car and side roll.

Hi there,

I have the same exact car, and went through the same process. First lets talk about size's
I chose the route of going with 225'/15s all around so that I could maximize tire life by being able to rotate any tire to any position. That works great for me. I use 1/4in spacers on the front to keep them from rubbing on the springs, but the spacers then require longer wheels lugs so you get a good thread on the nuts. (gaaa the slippery slope!)

You can run 16's but not very well in a 225 without serious rolling or trimming of the fender lips to prevent rubbing. Although I FULLY admit that I have never run Tuffy (My 924S) with bone stock suspension or ride height so rubbing may be less of a problem if it were.

The downside of the route I took is that your tire selection gets fairly small. As in just a few possibilities. Fortunatly the Hankook RS-3 is a GREAT tire, dosn't cost much, has decent life, and comes in that size!. It is a 140TW so you will pay points for it though. I can't speak to the other brands mentioned as I have not used them...however. Just in looking at the sizes. In order to run a 15" you will also have to run a 205 which puts you with a bit less rubber on the road than the 225 and if you want to run the 225 in them you have to use the 16's and face rubbing issues.

I am happy to chat especially about our fine little 924S' pop me a note anytime! :beerchug:

I didn't realize I would have rubbing issues with 225/15s......my car is bone stock.....you mentioned I may get away with the rubbing with stock suspension....or is it safer to use the spacers...is that a pretty standard setup for the guys running 225s on 924s??

Thanks again for the detailed info guys

Let the slippery slope begin......

Well the easiest way to find out is to give it a try. I live in Murrieta and work in Escondido. I have mounted 225/15's. Either bring your car up and we can toss them on, or you can meet me at work and borrow a couple for a try on. I am running a POC event on the 24th and will need them back for it. Or we can do it afterward. Just let me know.
