PCA SDR

Went out to watch the SCCA Solo National Tour event at Qualcomm this weekend. Porsches and SDR members acquitted themselves well. Quite a few GT3s were entered in SS class, and Gary Thomason won in his black 2004 model.




Caymans were well-represented in AS class, and our own Carl Vanderschuit came out on top, co-driving OCR's Christine Newcomer's black S model.



Morgan Trotter was also there, driving his Dodge Neon SRT-4 to a win in the RTF (Road Tire, Front-wheel-drive) class by over a half-second.

Brad Roberts was there wrenching on a freakishly-modified 1974 Porsche 914 entered in XP class for Oregon driver Britain Smith. It was completely gutted with a tube frame, rocker-arm suspension, and powered by a Subaru WRX 4-banger:





It was just out of the shop and not fully sorted yet, so was about 3 seconds off the pace of the winning XP Lotus Elise, but probably cost about 1/4 of the $$$:



The fastest car there was this EM bugeye Sprite, which Jeff Kiesel from Poway and his wife have driven to 6 or 7 consecutive National Championships now:



Needless to say, there is very little original Bugeye left in that car now.

Here's the track map from the event. They ran counter-clockwise on Sat., then with some very small mods, ran the same course clockwise on Sunday. They keep strictly within the west lot's limits for the entire event, meaning that all the parking, pits, tech, impound and grid have to be north of the trolley overpass, so the course is truncated on the south end. With a little addition to the southern start finish area, it might make a good PCA course sometime.



The SCCA Pro Solo is happening at El Toro this weekend, at the same time we are running the PDS at the Q, so I won't be heading up there.

It was great seeing you at the event. The course's were a blast! They were quite fast and simple to see- bonus third gear section across the top. I agree this could be a fun PCA course- Lose the slalom in section two and maybe the one in section 5 and the course would have two third gear sections! Also could add a bit more course at both ends too. It was a horsepower course on Sat. But Sunday running the opposite direction was a wilder ride where you had to remember your lines and set up early.

I'm committed to the Pro Solo nationals this year and to be eligible you need to attend two events so I will be at El Toro this weekend.
