For everything there is a season.

Retirement is near. No, not from my day job, from my volunteer position as Autocross Chair. Word of these things has a way of getting around, and it was interesting hearing people's thoughts and suppositions at the event Saturday. "You're doing more big track stuff." "You've moved on to run with POC." "QUITTING? You haven't been doing it that long." "Aren't you going to stay on for life, like Jerry?"

Because of this, I felt a clear explanation was/is needed. We joined in 2009 and within the first few events, I wandered over to the start line and asked if they needed help, I was handed a flag, and began my tenure. I served with the ax gang in 2010, 2011, and 2012 and though it was challenging at times, had a blast doing so. I don't regret a moment and highly suggest it!

As many of you know I work with volunteers constantly in my profession. One of the things I've come to recognize is when someone needs a break. That's all this is, really. I just need to attend for a while, to visit with the folks in the pits, to hit my timed runs...perhaps not quite so tired, to let someone else be concerned with the nuts and bolts of the event. I'm not going anywhere, our abandoning the club.

Interestingly people seem to think that my retirement also means that Kari is leaving the reg and timing crews. Though admittedly we like being together, we aren't quite that joined at the hip. She is staying in both capacities, as she puts it, "I don't drive at events, but work so you can." I'll be on through the end of the year and hope that some of you will consider stepping up to the job.

Thanks,
Mark
