Well, Kary, this was his qualifying lap, so I imagine he was hanging it out a bit. Since he was a second or two faster than some guy named Wolf Henzler, I think he couldn't leave much on the table and was going all out. He even complained about being held up by two cars...

From what I remember about the discussion on Rennlist, his accident didn't happen in qualifying, it was in the enduro race (which he led most of), going into a corner a little hot, tracking out too far and hitting some dirt on the track and spinning out, collecting a car behind him. I didn't hear anything about it being anything other than a "racing incident". The still pics of his wrecked front end are still up on the net, so I don't think he's trying to hide anything.
Bob-
His seat is bolted down, it just flexs that much pulling 1.5 Gs. The Sebring track is very bumpy from what I hear.
BTW, I always go down thru the gears sequentially, as he was doing (just not that fast.

) I feel like the car is more stable under braking when it is in gear than when the clutch is depressed, and I am just used to rowing thru the gears in order, I guess-- it helps me find the right one to always do it the same, habitually. Hearing my engine revs drop as I brake also gives me a clue as to when I can do the next downshift without looking at the tach or speedo and I'm always in the right gear to speed up if something happens in front of me.
