Hello forum!

My name is Nick and I am trying to get a gauge of what a certain porsche is worth.

I have a 1968 (short wheelbase i think) left-hand drive 911.
European oil-coolers
upgraded fuel cell
1983 SC 3.0 motor

Motor runs extremely hard, interior and transmission need a little work.

I realize the 1968 911 was NOT imported into America, which is why i am posting this question to you guys. What is my car worth approximately?

That car is all about condition.
At minimum it has a 3 liter motor (Good)
But if the rest of the car is a liability it is a parts car.
If not a very fun short wheel base car!
SWB and a 3.oL, can you say, power on over steer?

BTW - we had 911L, and 911 in 1968 just not 911T or 911S.

Euro 1968 911T was the first Porsche I ever drove....

Bruce Anderson has published regular market updates over the last few years that are better suited to the enthusiast-value of Porsche -- as compared to Kelly Blue Book for example. His latest update can be found at http://www.911t.org/markupdt/update2005.pdf. So a normal '68 911's low value is about $7K and high value around $10K.

There is an interesting debate based on the engine change -- while the newer engine makes for a much much better car, should the value go up or down because the car is no longer a "true" '68?

My personal answer is that value now becomes truly personal -- how much would I agree to spend on this car in this configuration? And how much am I willing to spend to maintain it within that evaluation?

My advice -- don't worry about value until you're ready to sell it. For right now, drive the heck out of a fairly light car w/more than adequate horsepower but requiring a different skill application based on its short wheelbase.

The car IS for sale! I was just trying to get an idea of what it is worth. It was originally purchased for 13k in LA...

I wouldn't put any faith in Bruce Andersons early car values. he is beyond out of touch. Early S's in excellent condition for $22k?

As Steve said, it's all about condition with a car like yours. The older non-galvanized unibody is very susceptible to rust. The engine transplant actually decreases the value of the car, except for someone who wants the extra performance (it could make a great autox weapon!) I am not surprised that the transmission may have problems with the torque of the 3.0 compared to the original power levels. One would have to discount the price by about $1500-2000 to account for a tranny rebuild. An interior freshening could add a similar amount.

As Michael said, it becomes a personal decision which can't be predicted by any "price guides" when a car has been so extensively modified. If you found the right buyer, you might get your $13K out of it, if the body is rust-free and the engine has good compression and leakdown numbers, but it is more likely that it would be a sub-$10K car if you needed a quick sale. Put it on Ebay with a reserve and see what happens. The early car market has exploded lately, and it will give you an idea of the value, even if it doesn't sell the first time around.

Wow...thanks for all the information guys! It is quite refreshing to hear concise information from the source! I never expected to get 13 for the 911....i was thinking more around 6k. It's actually my brothers and I wish i had the energy (translate that to never ending funds) to take his car....but my 98 SVT contour still has my heart right now!

I will definately post the car in the classifieds here first...in case anybody wants it. I will take it down to Steve first and let him take a look at it so there is no surprises.
