944 Suspension site

Postby Mmagus on Tue Oct 26, 2010 1:20 pm

Hi all,

In researching the upcomming suspension-o-rama I came across this site. It seems pretty good, but when I read the section on corner balancing it rapidly lost all meaning to me. Sort of like when I talk to my dog.

What I say, "Bolt, come here its time to go in the house."
What he hears, "Bolt, come blah bla blah bl bl bl bla house."

Maybe its because that section was written by: Dr. Steven J. Timmins PhD Mechanical Eng/Design?

And also look at:

Clarks Garage

Lindsey Racing

Elephant Racing

Websites for a profound amount of information about 944 series cars.

Of course if you want to actually speak to someone about 944 stuff, Steve Grosskemper and Ryan Calvert (who actually commutes to his shop in a 944) both have more knowledge than almost anybody else. ANd of course a plug for Ryan at RSR Autosport since he is currently finishing the alignment of my 944, you should chat with him about corner balancing (which he does not believe is the right answer, by the way).

Interesting statement--if corner balancing isn't the right answer, what is? The only controversy over it I have ever heard is whether it is more important to balance the front weights for braking VS the cross-weights for cornering balance (in a non-centerseat car like our Porsches).

I've driven my car with and without corner balancing and I feel that it makes a big difference. For those of us with limited horsepower, we need every advantage we can get. If I can carry an extra 1or 2 mph through a corner, then that's probably going to give me the advantage I need to win. If I have to fight the suspension, I'm going to lose precious momentum. In case you haven't heard, 944's can only go 97 MPH downhill with a tailwind anyway. If I lose momentum, that could go down to only 94 MPH and I'll have to start pointing by kids on skateboards.
