996 Turbo Tip trans leak help

Postby Drews996 on Thu Mar 05, 2015 10:48 pm

Hello,
Took my car, a 2003 996 Turbo Tiptronic with 30k miles on her to the dealership for an oil leak and service. I got the call and they informed me that a seal was leaking and the only way to fix the issue was to have them order a new transmission from Porsche since they are not able to replace the seal. They quoted me 15k for parts and labor. Has anyone in hear experienced this issue or one similar? I started looking online for rebuild kits and have seen a few tuners that offer to rebuild the transmission for much less but I would need to ship my tranny to them. I don't have the resources to take the transmission and engine out the car? Does anyone know of a shop in Southern California that can work on these transmission?

Yes, this is common. Porsche recommends replacing, not fixing, tiptronics. Private shops can 'fix' for significantly less. Call Blackforest or other shop to discuss.

Also, if the leak isn't too bad, adding fluid every few months is CHEAP, and is often the best solution.

Good luck.

Yep,
The front nose cone gasket is leaking.
There is a defect in the cover and it pushed the gasket out causing a leak.
There are no serviceable parts from Porsche.
It is repairable with parts from "Another supplier".

It has been a few years since my last one but I think it is about 25% of Porsches replacement option.
I think you talked to Brian at Black Forest yesterday.
Bring it in and we can give you a real estimate.

Thanks Steve. I did speak with someone at Black Forest the other day and he told me to bring it by and speak with Jeff. I was planning on doing that this weekend, early Saturday, after I pick up my car from the dealership. He told me that they ship the transmission off to Colorado for the work, do you know what company does the repain in Colorado?

I've been looking at a few places that will rebuild the transmission like IPD and Renntech but I would have to remove the transmission myself and ship it. Unfortunately I do not have the garage space nor the expertise to tackle the job! From what I've read, they upgrade the transmission to handle more power for about 4-6k dollars. My car is as stock as they come so I'm torn!

Nope, all local.
We can discuss tomorrow, Jeff and I will both be in the shop.
