Hauling Gomme With a 986

After a couple big track events where a tire/wheel change was not possible (I didn't have a way to get my extra wheels to the track), I decided to explore my options for self sufficiency. I saw at least one pcasdr member hauling his wheels with a custom trailer on the way back from the track.
Not being a proponent of half measures, I decided to do the best research possible into a solution I could find for my car (986.2).
I came up with two.

Two tires on the roof rack, a front tire in the front trunk, and one tire in the passenger seat (remember to strap it down so it doesn't mess with your shifting or injure you)...

I have never seen one in use and was wondering how well they worked.

How do they attach to the A and "B" pillars?

All 986s actually have threaded bosses built into the windshield frame (under the weatherstripping) and on the top of the rear quarters just behind the side windows (under a small filler plate). The mounts attach to those points, and the rack attaches to the mounts.

The only inconveniences are that you have to be careful putting the rack on to avoid body damage (I put it on one arch at a time), and once mounted, the roof cannot be opened or closed.

With a bigger piece of plywood, I have seen 4 tires on top of early 911 with Lewis Wise and Tom Tweed (I think)

Yes. I didn't use plywood, but before I got my trailer, in the days of driving early 911s that still had rain gutters, I used a Surco Safari basket rack with Thule uprights to carry four 15" rims with 205-50-15 tires on the roof. With bigger wheels, you have to have a pretty big basket that won't easily fit on a 911. Lewis Wise also did this, for sure, and had one episode where the whole rack started creeping backwards on the rain gutters when driving at speed. I had to really tighten the clamps and use split Tygon tubing on the feet to keep them from moving backwards in the gutters.

Needless to say, this was not easy on the paint at the contact points of the feet in the gutter.

Please let me know if you're interested in doing this, It works out pretty cool. The hitch is pretty custom and expensive, but it works nicely.
