Rank yourself.

Postby MikeD on Tue Aug 10, 2004 9:17 am

As an attempt to encourage participation in the new forum we have enable a ranking system. This system is based on the number of posts made by a member. You can see the rank of each member directly under the username of the member and will be assigned as follows:

Member = 0 or more posts.
Autocrosser > 50 posts
Time Trialer > 150 posts
Club Racer > 500 posts
Speed World Challenge Racer > 1000 posts
Pro Racer > 2500 posts
Le Mans Racer > 5000 posts

Is there a list anywhere to see the top ten posters? Make it a competition if you want more posters! Maybe a BRI rating for those who don't sit at their computer all day or those with dial-up connections???

Well the simple answer is that you can view the top ten posters. Just click on "memberlist" (top right), then in the Select sort method drop down list select Top Ten and then click Sort.

Looks like at this point you are running behind Dan A. by a mere 3 posts.

I'll have to look into the BRI idea...

I question two premises of this "competition":

1. That more posts are automatically better. I see no point in filling the ether (and the server's hard disk) with meaningless chatter. "If you have nothing to say, say it!"

2. The rating system that implies a ranking to the various forms of driving competition. DE and TT drivers engage in different forms of competition from Autocrossers, but this doesn't automatically make them superior. Some drivers enjoy competing at the AX level but prefer not to modify their cars as required for DE and TT. I'm sure the slur was unintended, but we should be careful not to diaparage any of SDR's activities.

Well, disk space is cheap and text is light. So if we get a few unintelligible posts for the sake of community involvement, club camaraderie, and participation then so be it.

And, well... it's a message board for a car club, what should the ranks have been: Daisy, Petunia, Orchid? Look at it this way, those people that don't want to modify their cars in the real world can become DEer, TTer, Club Racer, etc in a virtual one. Have fun with it.

I like the idea, though most of the other forums that I particpate in do not use racing groups to classify them. As I told David M when he asked me about this the other day, I was worried about excluding a large portion fo the membership that do not do competitive events.

If we do choose to do this I would like to see the "Carerra Cup" level as this is a fairly prestigious group of racers, IMHO.

Well, I'm in favor of having ranks and plan to keep them unless there is a compelling reason not to. I wanted to set them up from the beginning but lacked the creativity to come up with decent names. With Dave's help we came up with a good starter list. I am open to suggestions on how we can improve or modify the list. No one has achieved the first rank yet so it's not like anyone would be crushed if we renamed it.

"Carrera Cup" is good. But don't think it might be insulting all those PCA members that don't drive Carreras? If you want it to stay where should it go? Between "Pro Racer" and "Le Mans Racer"? Replace "Speed World Challenge Racer"?

As an aside: I don't know if anyone has thought about this or not. The term Carrera was introduced to distinguish the 4 cam motor. So any Porsche with a 4 cam motor is technically a Carrera, correct?

It would be nice if we could set up a special path for every aspect of the club. Unfortunately, that is not possible at this time.

I want to keep the list Porsche related, which means Sports Cars, Racing, or if you want to be geeking Engineering (although, I think "Geek" and "Nerd" would be more offensive to our fellow members than the current list). So let me have it. What's your list?

Well my first list included: "chatty" "long winded" and "verbose" but then I remembered we were a car club; a car club that is and (hopefully) will ever be entwined with racing. And if some people would prefer to not have a title tied to racing, perhaps Mike can change their's to "verbose".

Re: Rank yourself.

Postby MikeD on Thu Aug 12, 2004 2:48 pm

OK, the list has been modified as follows:

Member = 0 or more posts.
Autocrosser > 50 posts
Time Trialer > 150 posts
Club Racer > 500 posts
Pro Racer > 1000 posts
Carrera Cup Racer > 2500 posts
Le Mans Racer > 5000 posts

And Dave, you are correct. What I meant by we don't have the capabilities is that we can't define a set of Ranks for racers and another set of ranks for non-racers. But we admins can create and assign all the ranks we want. We could say create a "Weenie of the Week" rank and assign it to someone who annoys us to much

Just to be thoroughly disparaging to all parties equally, I think the heirarchy should be:

Socializer = 0 or more posts.
Rally driver > 50 posts
Autocrosser > 150 posts
DE driver > 500 posts
Time Trialer > 1000 posts
Club Racer > 2500 posts
