Where's the love?

Postby Jackie C on Sun Feb 14, 2010 8:15 am

Do you realize how many people help at the autocross that don't even drive? Yesterday I was noticing folks who spent part or all of their day volunteering just to make our day better. I know I'm missing a bunch but here's a few. Whoever got there before us, who had the track set up and roped by 6:30?!!! Janet Yaws, Kari Bray, Cathy Young, Tom Brown, Jad Duncan,Steve Groskempker, Dan Chambers, Steve McKay's wife, Steve Snedeker (1st timer) and his wife, Gail Dana, Emelia Turkovich, Greg Philips, Ted Witte, and Joel Bowman's wife . That's just the people who volunteer the day OF the event. There are plenty more involved in the planning, timing, registering and track design, but don't get me started. All we need now is an equipment chair...Thank you to everybody for making this club run so smoothly.

It is indeed the people that make this club what it is. I'm glad to be a part of it.
Most do their part (I always take a student if there are any and try to help load the trailer) but some of us go that extra mile. They are truly the unsung heroes
I'd sing about them, but it scares the cat.......

Thanks for the great words Jackie. I do want to let you and others know that the love is being paseed, if not necessarily in the forums. My wife, has repeatedly told me how welcomed, encouraged, and accepted she felt at the event on Saturday. She isnt a driver and really has no desire to become one, but everyone took her right in and made her feel welcome.

Having been there, I know we can't show enough love to our current AX chairs. They got out there Friday afternoon with the trailer and threw cones to be sure the "first car out" would be on time. Jerry B. and Don A. were back out there early Saturday morning putting on the finishing touches.

Jackie's right in saying that the supporting cast often is overlooked. But, that AX chair position is doing double-duty.

Thanks for the kind words, Jackie, and the rest of you.

Over the years I've always been amazed at the contributions made by people for the love of the sport of driving, the friendships of PCA members, and the interest in giving a little extra so that everyone has a great time at perfectly run events.

I don't know about other folks, but I love to drive Porsches ... a lot! My desire to drive really inspires me to step up and help. It's really quite simple for me: the harder I work at preparation and organization the sooner I can get to the driving part.

If you've ever sailed, or surfed, or climbed mountains you know that preparation is key, and organization is the difference between a great trip (or event), and a difficult one fraught with continual interruptions and delays. So, I step up to "get 'er done" for the sake of getting behind the wheel. Am I selfish? You bet! I want to drive! So, getting there early, breaking a little sweat, hustling to help the Chairs get the duties done on time and correctly the first time, stepping up whenever asked ... that's all about gettin' behind the wheel. Get outta my way if you aren't gonna help, 'cause I'm on a mission and that mission is gettin' things done.

Based on the what I've seen over the years, I'm not alone in this idea. The new Chairs put forth an incredible effort for the sake of us "driving junkies" and I applaud  their efforts.

So cheers :beerchug: to all who like to work hard so we can all drive more laps. You  guys/gals are the best! And to those of you who think I'm a crazed work-a-haulic and want to laugh at my efforts; have a seat, slackers, your in my way. :burnout:

Here's to all the volunteers! :beerchug:

All the Best. 8)
