One note on the safety of the track this time around near the bridge...I know you help coordinate this event on some level and know the different chair persons...please make sure that the track safety chair is very clear/strict with the corner workers that they are to put the cones back exactly where intended...I suggest marking clearly with chalk (last time the rain made that pretty hard). As the day went on the "speed check" section got faster and faster and in my opinion was a large contributing factor to the accident. Okay, my safety rant is over...see you guys there!!!
Yes, our driving team is all over it. Back in Nov. we were saddled with the third string Willow corner worker crew who were not used to picking up cones and were totally unprepared for the heavy weather. We bought them all ponchos but it was still a mess and they were pretty ineffective with 1" of rain falling. It was also our 1st DE at Fairplex and we learned a lot about layout and controlling the track. Our long time CDI Mike Mulligan will be setting the track with safety as top priority. We have some very "special" cones for key apexes and safety areas that no one will be hitting

. The pits will also be moved way back from the track to create more of a buffer since there is no hot pit wall. Our corner worker team is the "A" team from Long Beach who run VARA, SCCA, PCA-FOS, INDY/ALMS- Long Beach Grand Prix, and racing events throughout SoCal and they are excellent. Black flags will be frequently given for cone killers during the DE. Multiple Black flags for course violations= end of session. Overall I think this is a very safe venue with huge asphalt runoff areas and really only one place to hit stuff "entering The Tunnel". It also happens to be the most fun and unique part of the track.
Good judgement applies at every DE where there are safe places to explore "pushing it" and places to you need to keep it reeled in. Just ask the 3 guys who wadded up their cars in turn #4 during the first session at PCA Coronado Speedfest in 2009.
Rule #1: Just don't hit stuff. Always remember it is a PCA Driver Education event. Penske and Ganassi will not be scouting for hot shoe drivers from the grandstands and the only trophy is bringing your car home in one piece at the end of the day.
See ya in the tunnel...
