I hardly noticed that (it went by too fast), but I was wondering what the coned chicane barrier right after that (at about 1:25 in that video) was for? Intentional speed reduction? Avoiding bad pavement?

Speed reduction prior to the approach of the overhead camera array. With those tire stacks at the corners, people were somewhat more cautious than they were the following day, where, for better or worse, the stacks were removed and the speeds climbed much higher.

So, a faster, riskier course for the autox than the DE? I don't get it...

There was a huge dip just after that light pole. In my video, I lift for a second, then brake before getting back on the throttle. The time I tried it flat, I got my front wheels off the ground.

400lb springs up front, with a 220# passenger...

The layout for the AX allowed me to get to 4th gear, which is less than ideal for that environment. While I agree that an AX should have cones and no barriers of the tire stack variety, removing the stacks allowed the long straight to become much faster than it should have been. Without the stack, I was flat out without lifting through the chicane (don't even ask how fast). So for the next AX at Pomona, I would recommend that more speed reduction features be included for that section. Just my two cents. I was torn between getting a great time, and staying safe at AX. I'll be taking up this issue with the organizers next week when I return for the DE Instructors event.
