Instructor Day -- Big Thank You!

Postby terryb on Sun Jun 30, 2013 6:31 pm

Just wanted to thank the CDIs and volunteers for putting on another really great event. The day moved along at a nice clip, the exercises and track were extremely fun and the embroidered bag will come in very handy.

My morning didn't start off so good. I discovered that my alternator stopped working on the way down and had drained my battery, I thought my day was done but was overwhelmed with offers from people willing to share their cars. Very big thank you's to Sean Cuneen and Steve West. Ryan let me drive his Cayman for an AX session, which was my first time driving one and wow, what an eye opener--so balanced and easy to drive fast.

Thanks to Martin Lipp for letting me use his portable battery jumper which was enough to start my car and get it to the trailer.

A really huge thank you to Keith "Dude, just shut the f*** up and drive my car!" Verlaque. He was extremely generous to let me burn his gas and tires for the whole day in his sweet RSA. Man, that thing's got some power. Ummm, so how exactly are you in CC07? Keith also drove home at lunch to lend me his battery charger so I could juice up my battery to make it back home to Oceanside. It was close--I pulled in the garage at 10.8 volts! Thank you again Keith. (Sorry for beating you in the slalom. :D )

Another shout out to the CDI team for a really fun event
I got more laps than two or three typical auto crosses put together, and it was very instructive (sic) to ride with another instructor for the first time in years.
We all have something to learn from each other. Kieth and I compared instructing strategy and although we go about it different ways, we arrive at the same place with the students - "Look father ahead! Look farther ahead!!"- and it was a real treat to run several laps in Kieth's prized RS. I'm not at all used to it of course so at first I was thinking "how in the world can he go so fast in this thing? Damn thing won't turn without a crow bar!"
But as the laps went by and I started getting used to it I of course realized that it does other things wonderfully (exit corners on the gas for example, and it has MOTOR) and by the end I had improved enough in it to be slow :banghead: .
This kind of "cross pollenizing" is exactly what we need as instructors.
Playing "The Farce and The Furiousererer" on the skid pad and racing.....uh.....comparing performance....in the side by side slalom and new event were fun too..

It was a really fun day. Huge kudos to our intrepid CDI's and the legion of volunteers that made this possible. It was nice to see our fellow drivers show up and volunteer for corner working. Several people that I thanked made the point that they wanted to contribute because they appreciated the Club and the Instructors. Today really bolstered the esprit de corp of all the Instructors and Volunteers that make our AX program possible. Thank you everyone.

It turned out to be a "normal" summer day and not too hot. Whew!

It was great to see everyone sharing rides and cars in the afternoon sessions. LOTS of laps!.... and that was after lots of pitch & catch, slaloming and threshold braking exercises.

I think next time we will try to have a tire sponsor for the event and have a tire company at the event with a healthy supply of discounted tires for purchase and mounting!

Thanks you Dave Malmberg for lending your car to me for a few laps. And, uh, thank you :?: (?) Dan Chambers for letting me drive your 911 with a 3.6 motor. My 3.0 will feel inadequate now! (will I continue down the slippery slope we all know so well?)

So, thank you instructors for attending and your input on the exercises. We look forward to next years new and improved instructor day.
