FORMULA 1 CHAMPION- MICHAEL SCHUMACHER IN CRITICAL CONDITION

For all of us that have enjoyed Formula One racing over the years, especially having followed the illustrous career of Michael Schumacher the following information is sad to report: (info directly from Fox News and A.P.) Not sure of current status-

Seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher is in critical condition after he suffered a head injury in a skiing accident in the French Alps Sunday.

The hospital where he is being treated, The French Mountain Gendarmerie, said the 44-year-old arrived in a coma and underwent brain surgery after sustaining a serious head trauma.

The hospital said Schumacher was wearing a helmet when he had a hard fall at the Meribel resort. In a statement, the resort said Schumacher was conscious when rescuers arrived on the scene.

Additionally, orthopedic and trauma surgeon Gerard Saillant had traveled from Paris to the Grenoble hospital to examine Schumacher. German news agency dpa said it was Saillant who operated on Schumacher when he broke his leg during a crash at the Silverstone race course in 1999.

In an email to The Associated Press, Schumacher's manager Sabine Kehm said the retired driver was on a private skiing trip and "fell on his head."

"We ask for understanding that we cannot give running updates on his condition. He wore a helmet and was not alone," Kehm said. Schumacher's 14-year-old son was skiing with his father when the accident happened, the resort said.

In addition to the crash at Silverstone, Schumacher was hurt seriously in a motorcycling accident in February 2009 in Spain when he suffered neck and spine injuries. He recovered sufficiently from those injuries to make a comeback in F1.

Schumacher retired in 2006 after winning five straight titles with Ferrari following two earlier ones with Benetton. He came back to the sport in 2010 and drove for three seasons for Mercedes without much success before retiring again last year.

The Associated Press had contributed to the Fox report.

Prayers and positive thoughts to Michael Schumacher and his family after this tragic accident.

I've been lucky enough to see him race live in F1 a few times and have always been inspired by him. Beyond his legendary status as a Formula 1 world champion however is his generous humanitarian efforts around the globe. He has donated tens of millions for schools and hospitals in impoverished areas of South America and the Eastern block countries. When the Christmas Tsunami hit Asian in 2005 or 2006, he donated $10 million of his personal money for relief efforts.

Ironically, his generosity and karma may be coming back to help him in this accident. Schumacher is one of the main donors and founding members of the ICM (Insititute for cranial and spine research) in Paris lead by Dr Saillant and it's in fact that same doctor who was brought in from Paris to assist. He should be in good hands.

Feb.12 (GMM) F1 legend Michael Schumacher, in a coma since his skiing fall late last year, is now reportedly suffering from pneumonia.
The major German daily Bild-Zeiting said that two and a half weeks since doctors began trying to wake him, the former Ferrari and Mercedes driver is now on antibiotics to treat the lung condition.
"The consequences are not yet clear," the newspaper's correspondents said.
"Whether the waking up process was stopped because of the infection is not known."
Schumacher's manager Sabine Kehm said: "We do not comment on speculation."
Professor Heinzpeter Moecke, of a Hamburg hospital, told Bild: "Pneumonia is generally a serious and dangerous disease, because the body is supplied with less oxygen and is weaker."
He said comatose patients sometimes contract pneumonia because ventilation prevents coughing.
"A healthy person coughs or swallows several times per minute, usually without noticing it. This protects the lungs," said Moecke.
Schumacher's former Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa told reporters in Sao Paulo this week that he recently visited his friend in the Grenoble hospital.
"I went to see him on a day when there was nobody from the press there.
"I stayed by his side for a long time," said Massa. "It was good to be there.
"It just looked like he was sleeping, like any of us sleeps.
"I'm really hopeful everything will be ok and that he will wake up and recover fully," said the Williams driver.
Massa said he is receiving daily updates from the Schumacher circle about the great German's condition.

While that sounds good, apparently he may be almost brain dead but alive. I hope the rumors are wrong, but it is not sounding good. :-(
