I got screwed by the timing thing too.
My second lap was 1:38.01, which was still not fast enough to win, and three seconds slower than Jad ran last year. But, it looks better than what the results show.

That was a lot of fun -- eventually. I was really struggling to figure things out that first day. Thanks to Jae and Otto for showing me a lot.

Otto did amazingly well, finishing 9th overall in his little JP turbo, and also with a time of 1:35.16, which was close to three seconds faster than Mats and I and KP, and following that with a second lap that he tried to drive backwards through turn 9 --- SHOW OFF!! :)

My only complaint about Otto is that he removed the Turn 9 apex cone without warning, and when I came around turn 9 for my first timed run, I was like "Holy crap, where's the apex?!". I thought I got lost :) Fortunately, the brain kicked in and all was good.

Now I just need a little more practice.

I am as guilty as Bob about using the cones as landmark, but it is good to remember that they are just training aids (crutches) to help you find your line around the track. But they are not really landmarks, because they are mobile. We need to try and use real landmarks on the track for our braking points, apex, turn-in points etc so when the cones are gone, our points of refence are not.

Congrat to Bob for making great progress through the weekend, sorry those turbos like the altitude so much better than NA cars.

Bob, go ahead and keep using the cones, I always move them 2-3 feet before timed runs. Just enough to mess you up, but not enough to notice. It is a long drive just to move a couple cones, but your frustration is well worth the effort

I have read about lots of organizations that record fastest lap of the day (or weekend). I'm sure logistics is tougher, not sure how all that works.

It does allow people to do a nice lap then go home early and still have a time for the weekend. The large numbers of people that don't do timed runs (vs say an AX) indicates that there is a problem. Might not be something that anyone cares to fix though, don't seem like a huge deal.

It figures that it was a 944 turbo that removed the cone. It was a conspiracy! You probably paid him. Hmmmm. Now, I'm wondering why Otto said to brake hard going into turn 8 during my ride-along with him. It is all starting to make sense.

Perhaps a loose timed session at the end of Saturday or Sunday morning and then a staged timing on Sunday afternoon? That would allow those that wanted to leave early to at least post a time. Just a thought.

David,

I am not Kary but here is my 2 cents.

That really opens up a can of worms. Especially with the weather we had this weekend. I ran a 131.8 in timed runs but a 130.5 sunday morning in the "cool" air. It also takes me about 5 laps to get up to speed (see "Til they get big enough") and my timed runs are usually not my best laps at big tracks. Now if we took our fastest lap of the weekend for everyone as their official time I would be all for that.

As for the low number of drivers to run timed laps there were a few broken cars but lots of cars out of tires or other mechanical malodies. Heat is hard on cars! A lot of people were just beat and wanted to go home.

There is no easy answer to this one as we have debated this previously here on the forum. The only thing I can suggest is what is done in POC at times and something Jack did this weekend. In POC sometimes there are run groups after the timed run session with the timed runs earlier in the afternoon or even right after lunch. Jack also shorten the afternoon sessions so we could start the timed runs earlier this weekend.

We could have the timed runs in the mid morning time frame on Sunday which would allow people to post a time and get home if they wish. This would be good for events like Pahrump where the drive is over 5 hours one way.

...and there are those who simply run Time Trials as a DE, and
choose not to do the timing part, no matter when it is.

Sorry, Kary, I missed seeing your comment until now. Does this mean that I can get serious with some smack prior to Pahrump?

Bob:

Thank you for the accolades. Just trying to keep you KP guys motivated. My second-lap stunt aimed at confusing you proved costly however. I flat-spotted 3 new tires and have a big dent on my LEFT fender from taking out that tall turn-9 apex cone while going backwards at 80 miles per hour. As they say though, could have been worse.

Somebody recommended a dent-repair shop in this forum. Could I get that name and number again? Also, I wonder if flat-spotted full thread tires could be saved by deep-shaving them? Does anybody know of a place in this area that shaves tires to have them inspect mine?

John, I think we can start smack talk now for Pahrump, no time like the present. Here we go....

So you feel pretty good about beating me at WSIR by about 3 tenths in a car that weighs 1000 lbs less than mine and has the same motor (probably fresher than my motor)  ? 1:30? Who would be driving to do that?

Hey, so how is that to start us off on the smack talk?

P.S. I feel for you on your tire puncture, it must be difficult since those Googyear are so sticky that they are like warm bubble gum on the track...hmmm....seems like it would be difficult to turn those 285 and 330 tires particularly as sticky as they are

Kary, I don't know where you get all your numbers (e.g. weight differential, tires sizes, tire compound etc.) but you're way off, as usual. I'd like to be able to make a comparison between our cars, but frankly, I never really focused on yours because I knew that after a couple of driving lessons, I'd be passing you by, in either the Bee, the GT3 or my wife's Lexus SUV!
Oh, I have to go now, the drug store just called and my Medicare prescription is ready. :)
Next?
Incidently, as I was smoking an Arturo Fuente "Hemmingway Short Story" stogie at the track, I realized that "Hoosier Daddy" has now given way to "The Old Man and the Bee".

John,
You are proud of beating a car 1000 pounds heavier with less tire on it? Do you also revel in beating up little girl scouts and stealing their cookies?

Beat Bob Ehrman and John Simone before you start puffing your chest out. Remember you got beat by a 2.7L, 30 year old brick 300lbs and 100HP lighter than you on smaller, scrapped throw away tires I bought from an Andy Galecky yard sale!

Ya, I know the feeling you are talking about. I had the same feeling chasing down Chris O'Donnell in his 993 RSR when his rear tires were totally shot and he just couldn't get the power down. Didn't matter that he was totally handicapped, I was running down the coolest car at the event and only wished I had it on video!
Also my fastest lap of the weekend! Now that was fun!

Hey Steve,

If you think there's 1000 lbs. difference between the Bee and Kary's recently gutted 993, you either need to get your scales recalibrated or stop sniffing that silicone sealer I gave you.
And I'd be happy to use Kary's Yoko slicks any time!
Regarding Bob and John, my contract with them says that I can't pass them at any time unless it's in the pits.
As to you and me, Steve, we both use "throw away" tires. I also have 60,000+ miles on my completely stock motor. You put new motor oil in this car and it looks like molasses the end of the day. And, if I had a car with as low a CG as yours, I could use my lawn mower motor to go as fast as you!!!

John, just weighed in the other day with a 1/2 tank of fuel, 2879. I am sure you car is under 2000 lbs, come on John.....BTW I use Pirelli slicks which are not as sticky as Yoko's or Dunlop slicks.
