Slot Car racers?

Postby Mike on Tue Oct 02, 2007 8:53 pm

Any one else interested in racing Slot Cars?

Several Porsche racers in the club have competed on slot car tracks too.

Roland Schimdt, Pete Millikin, Erik Kininnger, John Simone, John Risvold, Martin Rienhart and Allan Childers all share an interest in racing Slot Cars.

Here's my Hill Climb track, it's 135 feet long with a footprint of 16' wide by 42' long.
It was made in Canada by Olgilvie in the mid 90s.

The track is located in my garage.
Attached are photos of the track.

Several of us will be racing on this track (La Mesa) on Saturday October 20th from 3pm to ??.
Drop me a note if you would like to join us.
If you have a Slot racing buddy that would like to join us let me know.

Good luck racing,
Mike

Wow,

That's a Nice TRACK!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't done much with PCA yet, as I mostly do BMW Club events, but seeing that track, I'd be interested in building a SlotCar and coming to hang out with you guys.

What scale cars run on there? 1/24?

Hi Matthew,
Looking forward to having you over on the 20th.
This weekend I'll send you a private message with directions to my location.

We should have a nice group of experianced slot racers and first timers on Sautrday the 20th.
FYI Nationwide there are only 150 tracks in operation similar to this, maybe another 200 in storage.
The closest other tracks like this are located in Buena Park, Ventura and Las Vegas.

Here is what we are expecting for the the 20th.

This will be an open track day.
With 8 lanes everyone will have time to get on the track.
Together we can discuss future race dates and classes you want to run.

We expect to run (ANY CAR!) 1/24 scale Wing cars, GTP, GT1, Nascars, the new JK spec cars and the 1/32 scale cars too.

The new JK Products 1/24 spec class is an affordable $55 Cheetah 7 chassis with a Falcon 7 motor and Body ready to run.
These fun to drive cars run 4 to 5 second laps.
Falcon 7 motors last for hours and only cost $12.
We'll have 12 of these $55 cars available for purchase.
(6 of these have already been reserved/sold)
Along with a small supply of spare tires, braid and gears.
If you have a stainless chassis with a similar motor bring it down.
It is just for fun!

Earl Wilson is a local Nascar racer that travels to vairous tracks in So Cal and Vegas.
The 1/24 scale Nascar cars are similar except with more powerful motors.
They run a lap times in the high 3 or very low 4 second range.
These guys come prepared with larger pit boxes for spares and service work between races.
Earl will be looking for a good 3 second lap.

Joe Chevy our resident pro may try to set a new track record.
Last weekend he ran 3.1 with a 1/24 scale GTP bodied 12 motor car.
Joe normally races the open class Wing cars.
Come watch and we'll see if Joe's Wing car can re set his record with a screaming 2 second lap on the 135 foot long track!

There is a large following of 1/32 scale racers in San Diego.
These guys race very detailed replicas of real race and street cars.
Come check out all these very cool cars!

First timers are welcome to share a couple of my 1/24 practice cars,
We also will have plenty of spare controllers for your use too.

Just private message me for directions to my La Mesa location.
The track is located in my garage.
Please try not to disturb the neighbors.
No alcohol permitted during the event.

If you have a racer buddy that would like to join us just let me know.

Good luck racing,
Mike

Hey James,
Come on down.
I'll pm you with directions this weekend.
Yeah during construction we did have a beer or two.
This is going to be a dry event.
On the 20th with 8 cars on and flying off the track for 4 hours there will be plenty of chaos.
Come back again later for a low key private track day and we can flip on the Speed Vison, bench race with a cold one and run some laps.
You know they put cameras on slot cars too. :D
Best,
Mike

It was fun talking slots with several of you guys at the Coronado Vintage races.
I did get a supply of rear tires, so bring your old slot cars over and see if a new set of rear tires will bring it back to life.

I wanted to share some photos of the new $55 JK Products RTR cars.
A Cheetah 7 chassis with the new Falcon 7 motor, unique flamed GTP bodies ready to race.
The Falcon 7 is the newest Falcon motor ($11.95), it appears to have more torque and some owners report longer life cycles compared to the same price Parma motor.

I picked the gold paint job for my own car and ran a few laps.
The track was dusty but the car was fast, handled well and ran 4.4 second laps.
With a clean track and more (you) experienced drivers I'm sure we'll see an improvement on that.
For comparison today my $110 JK spring steel chassis with a Parma motor ran 4.8 laps.
While my $120 wing car, super light group 12 chassis with a $40 pro slot motor ran 3.9 times today.
As we all know it's not about record lap times, you have to keep it in the slot and this new $55 car seems to handle very well.

Here are the 9 cars from the order, several are spoken for but a couple are still available.
If you guys like them I'll order more. No two bodies are painted the same colors.

In the photo are some nice to have extras like, gear/wheel hub tool, spare plastic axle gears, spare axles, tires, braid, braid juice, track glue, body armor, Falcon 7 motors, and lane stickers.

It was a large order and I have no plans to become a hobby shop.
I would like to have on hand the required spares to keep the slot cars rolling.
I can save you a little $, no charge for tax or shipping/handling on these items.

I took the Orange car out of the box for photos.
It looked like a good color for a Halloween theme.
The gold colored car is mine and was the only car run.

Looking forward to seeing you guys this Saturday 10/20 starting at 3pm.
Send me a message if you need directions to this Mt Helix/La Mesa track.
Good luck racing,
Mike

I still have four of them. Back in 1996 and in 2001 I entered a few 1/8 and 1/10 off-road and 1/10 on-road races. But I am a bit out of practice as some may have witnessed at the Porsche Parade's RC autocross when I hit the only metal post in sight

Mike's new slot car track racing will be fun, I can't wait to take ownership of my new 1/24 race car.

All I have left is a dusty 12L RC car. I started in the early 70s with the Jerobee .049 powered cars, with a 1/12 scale on road racing club in the parking lot of the Briggs Cunningham museum near the Orange County airport.

Late 80s had a partial sponsorship with Ron Paris and did quite well with the 1/8 scale on road gas cars.

About the same time at the Cajon RC speedway helped as the Friday night race director/announcer. We'd get 110 cars every Friday, this was before before the transponder systems. Hand counting laps, then sorting mains and resolving conflicts with consideration to lap times, car numbers and frequencies.

Today when I have the time I try to join the Kinningers slope flying RC combat wing gliders. :D

As for racing this Saturday.
:D :D We are in for a fun time, John Simone, Martin R, Chuck Sharp and Pete M, Roland S and Eric K from the club are planning to attend.
Dave G is in Brazil for the F1 race so hopefully he'll make it over next time.
Should be another small group of long time slot racers in action as well.
Track is located in my detached garage, drop me a note if would like to join us.
