Who's going to streets, and when are you leaving?

Is there anything going on Friday? What time is tech, and can we pre-tech? I am trailering out of north county, and would like to caravan if feasible.

4est,

I'll be leaving from N.County sometime early afternoon on Friday. This is my first TT and I've never been to Streets of Willow, looks like an easy find.

Typically we are open for tech and on-site registration from 6-7 pm on Friday evening at the event hotel. Then we go to dinner at the Italian joint next door. Exact details are still TBD but those who have pre-registered will receive a letter via e-mail by the week of the event that lays out everything for the weekend. However, you should always attempt to pre-tech in San Diego. Saves time at the event and if you do have an issue you have a much better shot at resolving it if you are still in SD.

Don't mean to hi-jack this thread. But, I am going to Willow for an AX in May. Where do most people stay and what is the best route (or is there only one) to the track. How much time should I plan for travel towing.

Our event hotel is:

http://www.innoflancaster.com/

How you get there depends a bit on where you live. If you are close to I-15, it's common to take I-15 north to CA-138 north/west to CA-14 north. If you are in North County near I-5, then I-5 north to CA-14 north/east.

To sign up for our event, fill out the following form and fax it in:

http://www.pcasdr.org/img/2006/Calendar/TimeTrial/StreetsWillowApril22_23FI.pdf

Note that we have safety equipment and experience requirements. And our registration fee goes up April 8, so save yourself some money and sign up soon.

Forrest:

Definitely get pre-tech'ed here in town. Go to Mirage, Black Forest, Dieter's, Mind Over Motorsports, etc, and have them pre-tech, and do any needed prepairs/replacement of wear-items as needed -before you leave (brake pads, etc). Call for a lunch-time or mid-day appointment . It's probably not great for the "on the road" tech's to have to drive all the way up there like the rest of us, then have to tech a bunch of cars in the afternoon, early evening after a long day. They'd probably want to have a good dinner and rest before Saturday's driving, so let's give 'em a break.

I'll be heading up Friday. I'll most likely leave by 10:00AM or so to beat the traffic thru Riverside County/Norco/Fontana area.

I'll take the 15 to 138 to 14 as Robert indicates. It's quite easy, and I'd go to the I-15 via 78 to avoid the I-5 and I-405 thru LA .... which on Friday's is a major parking lot. (The Sepulveda Pass on 405 on Fridays just STOPS at about 3:00 PM. And don't get me started on the "East LA Interchange." Except for 4:00AM, you'll get "stuffed" at that quagmire every day of the week, most times of the day. Remember, LA is the second most populated city in America, next to New York. Why go there.... especially in a car? )

If you want, I'll meet you at Deer Springs Rd., North of 78, and we can go from there. There's a big "Park and Ride" parking lot east of the I-15. You're welcome to join me. I figure I'll get things set up at the hotel in the early PM, and pop by Big Willow to see if any PCASDR guys are running the big track for "test and tune" in the afternoon.

Either way, you'll have a great time. So, if I don't see you on the road, I'll see you in Lancaster.

I am planning on going up there for the "Day away from work" AX at Streets in May, so I ran some route plans through Microsoft Streets & Trips and got the following interesting info (I am starting from a point virtually equidistant from either I-5 or I-15):

I-5 route (I-5, SR-14, SR-138) - dist: 190.8 miles, time: 2:54

I-15 route (I-15, SR-138) - dist: 182.3 miles, time: 3:03

I-215 route (I-15, I-215, I-15, SR-138) - dist: 176.6 miles, time: 3:00

Is there a reason to stay on I-15 instead of I-215? :?: The latter seems to cut off almost 6 miles (although you only pick up 3 minutes?). Google Earth also recommends the I-215 route.
I certainly would take either of those routes versus going through L.A. and adding 24 miles of additional driving.

p.s - If you zoom in on Willow in MS S&T or Google Earth, they actually have the turns on Big Willow labeled, including "Late Apex Banked Sweeper". :D

Main problem with 215 is that it is only 2 lanes wide and backs up much easier then the 15. That said, unless it is really during rush hour I mostly always take the 215 when heading that direction.

John Rogers and I will be towing up on Friday, probably about 10:00a.m. Glad to convoy. One caution is that John's truck has a nasty habit of pulling into any Mc Donalds!

Jim, I'll try and make it out :beerchug: :) and see some of the POC boys I've read about here and on Pelican.
Dan, and anyone else that wants to caravan. I could be at the Deer Springs Park-n-ride on 15 around 11am or a bit earlier/later.

Also, is there a shop here in Escondido or a bit closer to tech my car before I leave? How's about Joe @ Euro Auto sports or Von Stieners here in Escondido. They both are WindBlown advertisers?
Thanks

Yeah. What Rick said. I avoid the 215 only because it's two lanes from Murietta to downtown Riverside, and then .... you gotta go thru downtown Riverside ..... and then it naorrows and it's smooth sailing to the 15. It's jut a personal preference.

If you go thru Riverside mid-day, it's actually fine. AM/PM rush-hours are really tough, but the rest of the time it's okay.

Also, if there's any CALTRANS construction that closes a lane on 215, you get hammered with the 2 to 1 lane squeeze, regardless of where it is closed. It's a good idea to check with CHP and CALTRANS about any scheduled lane closures/construction of you plan to travel the 2-lane 215 portions. All lane closures are permitted thru CALTRANS and scheduled ahead of time, so you can find out in advance where there are closure issues.

11:00 AM works for me. Deer Springs Road @ the rideshare? I could do that. That would put us thru Riverside around 12:30 1:00 were we to take the 215 (if we actually leave by 11:30). If we go 15, we'd get thru the 91/60/10-fwy squeeze mid-day as well. Not an issue there either.

Keep me posted.

And stopping @ Micky-D? :nono: I don't have a cardiologist on retainer yet. I'll pass.

If you're driving straight from SD to the track and want to avoid the hassle and stoplights of driving through Lancaster you can go this way:

15 North
138 West
Right on 87 Street (North)
Left on E Street (West)
Right on Sierra Highway (North)
Left on Rosamond- over the freeway and to the track

I think this is a much nicer route, especially if you're towing, saves about 10 minutes over taking the 138 to the 14.

Has anyone here taken 15N - 210W - 14N? Someone told me that this route is a few miles longer but not as windy or dangerous as the 138 if you're in a motorhome or towing a large trailer.

Since I start out on I-5 side of the county, I usually take 5 to the 57, to 210 to 14. About the only trouble spot I ever see here is the 57/60 junction. Other than that's it been pretty clear sailing all the way. A lot of the time there is a problem on the 5 going up the mountain, if this happens the 5/405 junction can suck major. Being on the 210 at this point can save 1 hour or more. (And... yes, I have sat in an hour plus traffic at the 5/405 merge, to then look in my mirriors and see no one on the 210  )

Some people prefer 5 -> 605 -> 210 -> 14. But everytime I try that the traffic from Fullerton to the 605 junction bites. So I get off the 5 earlier.

John Payne will swear up and down that the 405 is always good. But 9 out of 10 times I've taken the 405 to get through L.A. it sucks!
