Possible New Venue in San Diego

Postby ronaldtrotter on Thu Jun 07, 2007 2:57 pm

Read in the paper this morning that Baldwin is thinking of turning his off road course near Otay Mesa in to a motorsports park. He races off road CORR there now twice a year. In the article he stated in the future he would like to set it up to be used at least 5 days a week for car clubs and the like.

Maybe we should get the car clubs together to talk to him.

I've heard about building a motorsports park in Otay for 15 years and it never happened. Then the building boom happened and homes were constructed nearby that made it virtually impossible. That being said, I'd love to see if it could happen and have our own track instead of going up north all the time.

The interesting part about this is that they are already racing at the quarry. Baldwin has the land, the permit and was pointed in this direction by the county.
My thoughts were if the car clubs told him they supported the effort. They might get to help with the planning.

That's right near where my parents live and where my track car is stored! Alright!

It would sure be timely to have something to replace Qualcom as the clock continues to tick there. Maybe we should ask the Board for a resolution of support at the next Board meeting-- it seems like a no-brainer for all the local clubs to get behind such a venue. And if he is serious, I would think the Owner would be anxious to get feedback from his potential customers. Give this guy all the encouragement you can, Ron, and if you need any help doing so let me know. I can be enthusiastic :D

It's my understanding that the off road racing in southbay would be gone in a couple years? The only reason it was taking place was that the land owner/developer already had the environmental work done for turning it into houses in a couple years. Is that accurate?

According to the Union Trib. article last week the owner Baldwin of Baldwin Construction has plans to turn this into a Autosports Park. It sounded promising and something as a club we should look into and support. The article mentioned the drags at the Q and a track that could be used by the local car clubs for ax type events. Sounded to me like a Streets type of track for the sports cars. The plan was to have it active 5 days a week. It also stated that the County pointed him in the direction of the quarry he now uses, so that it could be used for more then off road.

So I don't think this is the same track he used for the first CORR event.

Man... too bad we can't use the Sports Arena parking lot temporarily for autocrosses. Stupid Kobey's Swap Meet :grr:

I did get a response from their PR person. Basically she said it is a long process but they are proceeding. She thanked me for our support and said she'd let us know if we could do something later. So I'll check back down the road and keep my fingers crossed in the meantime.
