It sounds like I missed a great event.

Anyway, how did everyone do in the AX?

Hey Dan,
TTOD was a nicely finished but gutted 914 4 cylinder.
Blue with a big white arrow on the front hood.
I want one! :D
1700lbs with cantilever slicks and the 1700cc pushrod VW engine.
He was 6/100 or 6/1000 faster than 2nd place Tom Provossi.
The TTOD was actually in a lesser modded (smaller displacement) class.

So in unlilmited M05 Tom P (has won several Parade AXs in the past) won his class and 2nd TTOD in his trick 914-6 on 16 inch GYs, kinda like Grosskempers monster.
3rd TTOD and 2nd in MO5 was Eric K.
4th TTOD and 3rd in MO5 Roland S.
5th TTOD and 4thin MO5 was Mark K.
results should be posted asap.
It was a fun day.
Best,
Mike

I talked to the guy in the blue 914 quite a bit at the grudge match AX today about the car since it is very much like my 914 when Bill Smith owned it and ran a small 4-cylinder.

He has never weighed the car, but 1700 sounds like a good guess looking at the car. Engine is a 2.0L 914 with cam and carbs.
Pano (I think) was interviewing him for the parade article today so stay tuned for details.
Here are a few specs:
Tiny plastic fuel tank (2.5 gal?)
912 non vented brakes (light)
No windshield or frame
Glass hood and fenders
All no-vital sheet metal removed everywhere.
minimal cage
7&8" Fuchs
9" cantilevers
Car is very nicely finished.

He, his wife and group of Zone-7 buddies were all really great people and make me yearn to get the 97 car back on the track.

There were a lot of great cars and some very competetive driving going on out there. Congrats to our AX chairs and volunteers for pulling this off. It takes a lot of dedicated people to pull off a two day event in one day.

Great driving by the SDR drivers. 24 1st place finishes for the region. Well done!! :P

Looks like one of those 3,200# water pumpers with a couple hair dryers driven some old guy managed 4th TTD:)

Great events! Have to get out my gun slinger outfits (Torch wrench in one holster and a timing gun in the other) track down that young wipper-snapper Eric!

Maybe Saturday at the Qualcom Corral.
Have Fun! Steve

Yeah Steve you are right, sorry on my post I overlooked your great drive.
You always get my attention on the track!
My results were just from memory, I have not seen the offical results.
I know (and Eric too) that you are always a big threat at the AX.
Someday soon hope to join you at an El Toro DE. :D

SteveG has *most* of it correct :) I replaced the inner rear passenger side suspenstion ear on it 2 years ago and aligned it for SteveN. It weighs a lot more than 1700lbs. It has ALL of its steal except what was removed for the winshield and flares. The 2.0 engine is "surprisingly" stockish.

Now, what you dont know.. it is an EX SCCA National Champ car that was owned by "The Reitmers". It is designed to do one thing, and one thing only (win at AutoX) SteveN rebuilt it from the ground up! His father (SteveN) is/was one of the original factory Porsche guy's sent to the USA in the 50's to train mechanics to work on the then new 356's!!! in the bay area. SteveN has upwards of 15+ years of AutoX experience under his belt in a stockish 2.0 914.

I have watched and ran with all the NorCal guy's for years. They end up with 2-3 times more seat time than you guy's get here in SoCal (based on shear number events) The long SD course did play hell on engine temps. These guy's that came down are all used to 40-50 second courses. Not 70+ second courses!

I wanted to thank SDR. Great event! Good course!!

By my count, San Diego Region finished with:

24 First place trophies
9 - 2nds
7 - 3rds
6 - 4ths
1 - 5th

47 trophy finishes for 75 San Diego Region drivers out of 306 drivers total. (94 SDR entrants, but 19 DNRs, 412 total entrants, but 106 DNRs.)

That is only counting trophy finishes - i.e., a 2nd place in a 2- or 3-car class wasn't counted.

Other regions of note:

Orange Coast finished with 8 trophies - 3 firsts
Pacific Northwest had 13 trophies - 2 firsts
Sacramento Valley had 9 trophies, and 5 were firsts, including TTOD

All in all, San Diego put up a very good showing.
