When things get close

Well, it's nice to see some other classes tightening up the competition besides KP/KI. Sean Steele and I drove the exact same time, but luckily I'm in GP. If I'd been in spec what would have happened? Is there a sudden death? Has this happened in KP? Inquiring minds must know...

The nice thing to do is to share the victory and enjoy, but in reality, whoever got the second best time officially wins.

Times are getting tight with the 944 class... I think we were all around .7 seconds apart. One little mess up and you are done... I just had a lucky run.

I remember running the exact same time as Jerry Sturm one time at the old EVOC track, down to the hundredth of a second. I have seen it happen several times at our events, but usually not in the same class (like this time), where you would need a tie-breaker.

The Zone 8 Competition Rules says "O. In case of a tie the other timed run(s) will determine the winner. In case of a tie on the other timed run(s) dual points and trophies will be awarded."

Note that the Parade AX PCRs specifically state that ties stand (A-8.2.4) - any tied competitors are to be given equal awards.

Personally, I think the Parade approach makes more sense. Your best run should determine your standings - if it is a tie, then both should be awarded the same points/trophies.

Consider a driver who has a good run, and then has a mechanical breakdown (or tire problem, etc.). If another competitor ties the first driver, and then has ANY additional run, does the second driver deserve the win more than the first driver?

Anyone else think we should propose a change to the Zone 8 Competition Rules to the effect that "a tie is a tie is a tie"? :)

That's an excellent point. In a Time Trial or Club Race, an important part of the strategy of winning is making sure your car survives (preferably with the best possible tires, brakes, etc.) to the very end. If you feel the same spirit should exist in the Autocross rules, then the current Zone 8 rules seem to make sense. If not, then perhaps the PCR's are best. Most importantly, as long as people know the rules ahead of time, they can adjust their strategy accordingly.

The tie breaker should be something other than driving... like a beer pounding competition. Half the sponsored cars are supported by local brew!

I've had exact times with other drivers three times if my memory is correct (I know of two for sure). Twice with drivers in my own class and once with a driver in another class. It seems like it would be nearly impossible but obviously it isn't.
