924S/944/951 gathering at Miramar Speed Circuit

A place to hang out and discuss all things Porsche.

Postby Tim Comeau on Fri Jan 11, 2008 10:50 am

Well , the invitation has received pretty good response on Rennlist, here, and on my own list of SD 944 drivers.
Let's see how many cars show up while you guys are inside karting!
I called the Speed Circuit and Jeff said there was nothing going on that would preclude guys from karting, i.e., a scheduled big party or such. He said even if something happened they would still work people in.
See you there!

Well, that was a pretty cool gathering!
We had 11 944 types there. Thanks everybody for coming out and sharing your cars and your enthusiasm. It'll be even bigger next time we gather them up.
We had :
4 944's
2 944S2's
3 924S's
2 full race log-booked 944 spec cars! (one that was trailered in and one that was street legal and driven in!)
The 944 spec car that was driven in had signs posting it for sale.

Fidel Fernandez showed up in his VW because his 944 was down hard.
The crowd hung out in the parking lot just getting to know each other better than by just their Rennlist handles. We looked over each others cars and discussed mods made. There was more discussion generated over the tech pubs/history books that were on display.
A few door prizes donated by CRE, including air and oil filters and some kart racing passes, were given out by drawing colored poker chips out of a hat.

After that, we went inside to race the karts.
9 or 10 of us raced, including the 2 lucky race pass winners, while the rest of the crowd watched. There were some serious smiles all around after the race, especially the first timers to the kart track.
One of the best moments of the gathering was when we left the Miramar Speed Circuit as a group. It was great to see the line of 944 types. I know some members of the Leano clan were shooting video of the group underway. We got onto the freeway and headed home. It was clear that we were all looking forward to the next gathering of 944's.
BTW, if some of you guys can make it, there's a PCA autocross at Qualcomm stadium on the 26th of Jan. Many of us will be there! Please see www.pcasdr.org for the details.

Wish I could have made it, 924T is down hard with a blown head gasket from the last AX (though will be running again today-I hope). And tow Cayenne for the 944 is getting a $2300 cooling line replaced.

First post, and I couldn't resist because I work at speed circuit. Jad is right; weight really doesn't matter that much, unless you are on the extreme end of the scale (really heavy or really light). In fact, a regular customer who is probably a good 40 pounds heavier than me, is almost always faster than me (not by much). The biggest factor, apart form the karts is the weather. Winter times are a good second slower than summer times. Rainy days are slower than dry days, even though the track is indoors. The karts are actually all pretty even with each one having its own quirks. Some are easier to drive than others but all are capable of achieving very similar times.

The karts are powered by 198 cc 6.5 honda motors. We have tried 9 hp karts and they are really, really, fun, but 9 hp is just enough power for the average driver to kill themselves.

And as for the Junior driving school, I am the regular teacher, unless there is an autocross coming up (Jan 26...), so bring the kids!

So why don't we start a regular PCA-SDR monthly night at the circuit? Seems that we could have a mini points system and a pizza afterwards.

What do you think?

I'm in, though from other posts, in may have to be a 'non' PCA-SDR event as it involves go-karts which seem to be a bad word in PCA :? Drinking and driving Porsches is cool, just don't do anything that involves a go-kart in any way

I remember the old saying from Econ 101:
in any system Speed, Quality, and Cost ... with limited resources you can only control two of the three factors

Soooooo ... Drinking, Driving, and Porsches ... we'll just substitute a small "porch" sized vehicle ... and we'll all have fun!

Actually ... if we had 10-15 regulars we'd be the same sized group as the monthly social group.

Linda, Laura, Jennifer, Jackie ... is the autoX pre-registration team game???

Most cool! Another opportunity to get beat by JC!

All we need is a few more of us to make a first time (and hopefully monthly or bi-monthly) event(s).

Sounds like fun, count me in as well...tough to get away for an entire autocross, but a few hours here and there karting shouldn't be too bad. :D
