Beater 944

Postby LUCKY DAVE on Mon Mar 10, 2008 9:47 am

I'm looking for a cheap 944 for my kids to use as an AX learner/abuser/street driver. Must be street/smog legal, in other words, I'm not looking for a spec racer. Somewhat ugly is ok, but mechanically sound would be nice.
Max price $2500.
Anybody got one lying around?

Lucky Dave, Search porsche in the San Diego craigslist, There is usually a decent selection of beater/cheap 944's to chose from.

I'm actively looking at Craig's list as well as other avenues. As you would expect, some owners have absurdly inflated ideas of the value of cars in good condition (and even cars in junkyard condition  ).
I'm not trying to steal one, and I'm prepared to pay a fair price for a nice(ish) one. A car someone actually cared about, instead of leaving abandoned under a tree for the last ten years with a dog living in it.
I just thought since we ARE club members, someone might have the inside line on an acceptable car for a reasonable price, that isn't being advertised anywhere.
All the good cars are usually sold word of mouth, just like yachts and airplanes. They are sold to discriminating buyers before they hit the general public's attention.
BTW, after lookin at a few I realize I'll have to pay more than $2500 to get what I want,....so be it.

I looked at a bunch, most are hammered dog $hit that the owners think are brand new twin turbo's. You know the drill.
Well, I bought one last night. 1984, every option including M030 (I think, it has the big bars, etc, I'll have to check the VIN to be sure) sport seats, interior/exterior 8+ out of 10, fresh tires/brakes/shocks, everything works, one owner, all records, garaged all it's life, bla bla bla.

$2500

MO30 on a '84? If so, that's cool! I didn't know they came with such an option in '84.

Yep,
Those were the hot ticket item in '84. A bunch on PCASDR members ordered or acquired them. Knauf original BEEPOOP 944, Bogusch GREY 944 and Susie Starks. Some even came with LSD! This car was the Cayman-S of its day.
How old do I feel...
I my day we had 142 HP, 215/60 tires and were glad to have it!
Now get off my lawn!

BTW-sounds like a great deal, hope to find one of those for my upcoming teen drivers.

Gosh, sounded like a tough hunt.........
...too bad there isn't a guy in the San Diego Region who specializes in 944's and knows where practically every "for sale" 944 in town is...
Sounds like you might have picked up that car with the Fuchs painted red?

Speaking of 944's...
Sean @ autobahn just got an 54Kmi 89 944 in with severe frontal damage. Engine is sold but remainder of car is pristine. Perfect black interior.

Really beautiful car.

Yeah Tim, that's the one. I should have called you, it might have saved me driving out to Poway to see that junker you had already rejected..
After talking to the owner of the car I bought on the phone, I decided I better go see it immediately if I was going to get the jump on my fellow vultures :D :D

The car is intended to be a learner for my kids, so I'm guessing G/SS?

Ok, great! That sounded like a great 944. Since it had Fuchs and the guy said it was loaded, I had a good feeling that it also had an LSD.
A 220 (LSD) and 401(Fuchs) optioned car is the stuff! I hope for your sake that it still has the original tranny. Should have an 8Q code stamped on top of the bell housing.
I agree that the black car in Poway was junk. I offered the guy $200 if nobody took it by the end of the week. It's a parts car only. I did a good job of not laughing out loud when I saw the "fix" for the failed fire wall near the clutch master cylinder.....a block of wood jammed between the wall and the brake booster!
If anybody else wants to find a 944 to buy, lemme know. :D
