On average you beat me :? , now that is stretching for crumbs...At least blame the sun or that strong headwind that slowed you down. Maybe the gravitational pull of the moon was much greater on my car and shaved a couple tenths off my time :D

PS AM and KP, can't we all just get along?

STREETS of Willow Time Trial - BOWL

Postby jack miller on Sun Oct 24, 2004 7:25 pm

If the bowl is your concern, you should send in your money. CCW is the most likely direction.

Curt, I just saw this cost differential, though we are going to run the bowl I think. $95..........Hmmmmmm......

Please note that POC will run a time trial each day cutting into your track time both days. They also say they have 120 cars on the track, so lots of cars in 4 run groups? 6 run groups? Lot of time spent timing? How much real track time?. And, I hope you like your POC neighbor, because you'll be close to him all day both in the pits AND on the track.

Have fun!

Jack, not trying to undermine our effort here. I plan on attending either way. I would however like to see us get the most out of this track since it is tight and slower than others we have run. thus, the Clockwise direction with the bowl would be great!

How much real track time?.

While I can appreciate how much track time we get, Streets doesn't charge clubs by how much track time they get.
POC charges a non-member about the same as PCA is charging a member, including the transponder rental. I would like to see our track pricing reduced somewhat to be more in line with other clubs. Even $20-$30 more /person is fine, but $95.00 is quite a difference. Of coarse this is tied to attendance also. I understand we have the timing system to pay for, but I would think it doesn't have to be paid off so quickly.

Anyway thats my .02

So, we're:
1. running CCW
2. using the bowl
3. Sharing the event with the POC
Is that right, Jack?

I just ran the track both directions (Oct 28th) and the bowl is alot more fun CCW. Down that straight in 4th gear, brake hard, down to 3rd, run high for about half way around at full throttle, then start lifting off the throttle and pointing the car down. Car goes into a nice drift(NOT OVERSTEER!) guide it down to the late apex (notch in the pavement), continue drift by throttling up. You'll crest (pop out) over to the right side, then enter the next turn early. My 944-spec car will hold a tight inside line for most of the next turn.

Running CW, you just pitch the car fast into the bowl and let the banking slow your slide. After that, it's full throttle through it. Not as exciting or challenging in my opinion.
My best lap times CW were 1:32.59 and 1:32.85, but usually I cut low 1:33's.
Best lap time CCW was 1:32.94. Again, I usually cut low 1:33's.

Interesting that the combination of turns, drops, and climbs yield about the same lap times, huh? :?
I shot video going CCW and narrated it for our 944-spec guys. The POC is running a STS event Nov 6-7 there, running one direction the first day, the other, the second day. See which one you like better then?

Oh, one track note... :D
***Running CW going through the chicane "section " (actually 4 turns!) is a thrill because you can't see the track until you're on top of it. The ground drops away there. I picked out a white water tower in the far distance and used that as a reference. You need to resist trying to see the track, it's futile. Just aim for the water tower, drive flat out in 4th, and the track will be underneath you when you get there! Hard on the brakes for the last left turn part of the section, and slide it on through! Scared the hell out of me every single time I did it  Even after I knew the line AND that my car would do it! It felt like driving off a cliff.............
Cheers!

Tim, that sounds way out of my young *** league... That's why we start on autocross and work our way up to 3rd and 4th gear... LOL

Still, it sounds like fun to watch and since it's right in my backyard I think I would like to check it out.

Will things still be running noon 'til 5 or so? Entry fee for spectators? Beer? Grandstands? Etc...

It is fun to watch. Willow Springs has I believe a $10 per person gate fee. We won't be at the big track up front, but the smaller "Streets of Willow" track in the back.

There are some bleachers, but no beer, and plenty of sand and tumbleweeds.

Bryan,
We all gotta start somewhere..............
You just work your way up to it. I certainly didn't start driving my laps at Streets like that! I just began by finding my way because I had never been on that configuration, then started pushing. If I came out of the box driving like the lap I described, I'd beat my own butt!
Keepin' it real........
But fun.

Driving.....for the love of it! :D

I am a bit confused here...... I am understanding that POC is running their final STS event of the year at SoW Sat/Sun Nov 6/7.

We're re running our final TT of the year at SoW on Sat/Sun Nov 13/14 .....i.e. one week later.

How is it that POC is again going to be out at SoW with us....?

I'm obviously missing something here...can someone please re-engauge my brain?

JR-
Jack was replying to Curt and Kary above about running with POC the week before for $95 less when he spoke about the stuff you quoted. He was explaining why we might choose to run the PCA event vs. the POC event, and using the size of the crowd and amount of track time as examples that favor the PCA event. You have it right about the separate dates a week apart. There is no "merged" event, like there has been at Fontana this year, where the two clubs shared run groups in each other's events, AFAIK.
