Additional Time Trial Event, Round 2

Postby JHPGT3 on Wed May 28, 2008 5:01 pm

I'm sorry to confirm that after much work trying to put together a summer event at Fontana for both POC and PCA, the event will not take place. Rather than using this thread to go into all the reasons/obstacles that resulted in the decsion to not go forward, let me extend an invitation on behalf of POC to all San Diego PCA Time Trialers. The invitation is to those who hold a current PCA Zone 8 Competition License AND have recent experience.

You are invited to join POC at both our upcoming Tribute to LeMans event at Willow Springs June 6-8 and to our August 22-24 event at Laguna Seca.

The Tribute event is a 3 day event, though you can sign up for just Sat. and Sun. if you like. There will be at least 2 hours of track time per day for the Time Trial group. The base entry fee is $295 for the weekend (Friday is additional). If you do the Time Trial there's an extra $25. There's a catered BBQ at the track for $15. You will be given an annual Membership in POC at no cost (the $95 fee will be waived.

If you've never been to The Tribute, it's quite a spectacle --there's a 4 hr. Enduro that starts at 6:00 p.m. and runs well into the night to 10:00 pm. In the past we've had some cars running in the teens at night, brake rotors red hot against a dark sky --very impressive and exciting to watch.
POC's only requirement for you to participate in this event as a Time Trialer is for you to meet POC safety requirements --this means a driving suit, approved helmet, shoes (and don't forget the Nomex socks!). We have a roll bar requirement for Prepared, "V" and "GT" Class cars.

AS to Laguna, the schedule is not out yet, but it will be similarly liberal in terms of track time for Time Trialers and this is a big charity event for POC with a BBQ, cocktail hour(s)on Sat. night and silent and live auctions --we are extremely fortunate to have an Aug. weekend at Laguna Seca --very much in demand and the only reason we keep it is due to the charity event we put on.

If you would like to join us at Willow and/or Laguna, please contact me and I will assure you get included with a free POC Membership.
E-mail me at Johninrsf@aol.com.
If enough PCAers participate, I'll host a special cocktail party for our group.
BTW, there are about 27 San Diego PCAers who actively race with POC. You probably know most of them. We have an almost monthly dinner here in SD where we lie and bash each other about our mutual racing activities --if you join POC in these upcoming events, you'll be invited to join our dinner group.
Hope this invitation moderates any disappointment that results from our not being successful in putting together the Aug event at Fontana.
Best,
John Payne

Thanks for trying, John and Robert.

I will be going to Laguna Seca for 3 days of fun, but I am already a "dual" member. :)

Is the POC event at Laguna shared with Speed Ventures? They are showing the same weekend Aug 22-24 and I was planning on running with them, but would prefer to run with other Porsche's.

Yes, POC sold a run group to Speedventures. We have offered that slot to PCA for 2009.
We'd love you to run with POC this year, if posible.

Laguna

Thanks John, for the update and offer.

I'm a dual member w/PCA comp. permit and was planning on Laguna Seca. That would be my first event with POC unless I can pull off an STS day. Is this something I should ask Marty about, since it would be my first POC event?

There are 2 STS events this week end at the Streets.
Sign up for 1 of them (or both) and get signed off with a check out drive.

I was planning on doing the same thing. Can we get signed off with a PCA competition permit? I'm already a member of POC but haven't run any events with them yet.

Normally, POC requires participation in STS first or filling out an application to waive that requirement and then having a "discussion" with both Jeff Melnik, VP Motorsports and Marty Mehtarian CDI.
It's possible now (and this may not be forever)to get signed off for POC as a Time Trialer without doing STS if you have a Zone 8 Comp license and recent experience. If you want to do this, I suggest you go thru me. Tell me what event you want to participate in and I'll coordinate getting the approval w/o your having to jump thru any other hoops.

John - Thanks for your efforts to establish a Summer event at a closer and cooler alternative to Willow Springs. Also great news about the possible 09 spot at Laguna Seca. I'm trying to work out attending LS this year w POC.
