Monterey Historics 09 Recommended Activites

Postby Pete Millikin on Tue Aug 26, 2008 6:12 pm

Porsche is featured in 09 (August 14-16). I'm going next year for sure and would like to gather reccomendations while the event is fresh in people's minds. I'm interested mainly in racing but would like to gather info on worthwhile and maybe not so worthwhile activites.

To get it going, what days are best, what events are good (historics, pre historics, auctions, concours, other), where to observe, dining, accomodations, spouse activites, etc.

Feel free to brag and make us jealous

Pete:

My sister and brother-in-law have shown/sold art at that week's events for years (Concours D'Italiano, or something like that).

Lodgings are tight, so book as soon as possible. They used to call around at 12:01 AM in January to book their rooms (many hotels said you can't book before Jan. 1). Now, they take their big fancy motor-lodge/RV because hotel-ing was such a hassle. Some people have been known to stay out in Salinas because of the limited space in town.

Historic races, Concours D'Italiano, and the main Concours (Pebble Beach?) are all worth going to.

Greag Phillips can probably tell you heaps. He goes every year.

Have fun!

Monterey

I have gone for the last 14 years. I can help anybody with info to avoid some of the pitfalls. #1 Get a room ASAP. Wait 2-3 months before, and expect to pay $350 per night for a $19 room... all the way out to Gilroy. If lots of people are going together, rent a house. That's we we have done for the last 4 years. It's the only way to go.

Classic Motorsports puts out a great Monterey guide the month before.

I have been going for about 10 years. I have been to Pebble Beach once and the Concorso Italiano about 3 times, but not since they moved from Quail. This past year it was at the airport in Marina and the reports were not favorable.
I have a lot of fun at the race track and usually spend most of my time and "film" there.
I usually stay in Seaside, but ended up all the way out in Santa Cruz when Ferrari was the featured marque and I was slow to get going with my reservations. With Porsche in '09 it will be as popular.
For things not related to cars, there is all of Monterey and the central coast with wineries and wine tasting, Monterey Aquarium and Cannery Row along with the Wharf. With the beaches nearby and Carmel and Big Sur to the south and Santa Cruz to the north, there is lots to do, at least I have heard that :^)
If you have not been to the Pebble Beach Concours, it is a great event, but is too crowded for good photography for my tastes.
Here area few of the run group photos from this year's event:

The club may put together something for next year. I'm going to talk to the Board about it at the next meeting. A Hotel and Tour up to Monterey.

This will be an event not to be missed!

The word is already out in Monterey -- rooms in town are already listed in the $250 and up category. You'll also find that there are blackout dates for your AAA and similar discounts -- AAARRRRGGGHHHH!!!! But the Carmel Highlands Inn DOES have vacancies available at $775 per night.

Anyway, we are already starting some preliminary plans for Zone 8 activities for that week. A few years ago, we put together a Porsche caravan to Monterey that was phenomenal. It involved staggered pick-up points starting in San Diego and Orange County. McKenna Porsche in the LA area was a stop point and hosted breakfast to pick up even more cars. On to Santa Barbara Porsche for lunch and picking up more cars. it got a little spiritied along Highway 1 as we scooted around the Hearst Castle/Cambria area

I'm going to facilitate/collaborate with local Regions for a similar plan for next year. This will be very, very exciting.

When the 50th was celebrated in 1998, PCA members helped put together a display that included a representative of every Porsche model built in every year. It was awesome. I expect that we will be asked to do so again -- stay tuned.

By the way, there is a similar version of the staggered caravan being put together for this year's ALMS race in October. I'll post more info as soon as I get it.
