Really good info from Peter

Driver's Education AWAY from Qualcomm Stadium
by SDGT3 on Sat Jan 17, 2009 12:02 pm

Hello to all PCA members,

I want to post something as it relates to the on going discussion of what fellow DE Co-Chair Martin Lipp posted as it relates to conducting a DE at a big track vs. what has been customary to PCA and running a DE on the surface lot at Qualcomm Stadium.

When the current 2009 DE Chairs (Carl Scragg, Martin and myself) met with the 2008 DE Chairs (Chuck Sharp and Curt Yaws), we spoke about doing something different as it relates to DE's. As most already know, Qualcomm is probably in it's final years as a place we can use for the use of any motorsports and others in the club are already looking for suitable venues to continue to hold events locally, In the meantime, we need to look for new ways to do things and one that has been discussed for years has been conducting a DE at a proper track. One of the other reasons was to become a "feeder" series for the Time Trial events.

It was our opinion that there needed to be a better transition for individuals who autocross to progress to the TT series and what better way to do that than to have a DE away from Qualcomm and at a bigger track.

We thank you for all your responses to the poll questions as it helps us gauge what the membership wants. From said responses, we can clearly see that everyone would like to see a DE at either the Fontana infield or Streets of Willow, preferably on a Friday if it has to be a weekday. After our meeting this past Monday, I went to work contacing both tracks to check availablity. Please note that weekend days are not only already booked, but are cost prohibitive and therefore we are looking for weekdays.

Keep in mind that we want to have at least 1 DE away from Qualcomm this year, but we have to make sure it doesn't interfer with any of the autocross, time trial dates or other Zone 8 events. As a result, June was completely open. Also bear in mind that after late-June until October, both of these tracks become extremely hot and most don't want to go there. Therefore, I checked from early June to mid-June and gain from late October to early December and NO FRIDAY dates were open. As we are new DE Chairs installed just this year, we could not act prior to our meeting this past Monday and are late to the party in terms of gathering our choice of dates. If all goes well this year, we hope to gather earlier dates for 2010 and have that "Friday" everyone desires.

After discussing the most preferable date available with Carl and Martin, we have elected to reserve Monday, June 15, 2009 as a date at Fontana's infield course. Carl will complete a budget and propose it to the board at the next meeting in February.

Because Fontana is more expensive to rent than Streets, a higher participation rate is needed to make this work, including, but not limited to extending the invitation to other regions like OCR, GPX, LA, etc. What I can tell you is that the entry fee will be higher than Streets (estimate is appx. $49 more), but there will actually be LESS out of pocket expenses to members when compared to Streets because there will be savings in gas as Fontana is closer and most important, NO need for an overnight stay in a hotel in Lancaster or Palmdale.

Finally, we'd like to gauge the level of support or lack thereof, this date on June 15th at Fontana has at this point. If there is not enough interest, we will not put a deposit to secure the date after the Feb. board meeting.

We thank you in advance for your anticipated response to this questionnaire.

Sign me up and Mick Rosen, thats 2!

The sooner you get this out to OCR and other regions the better. I would also recommend posting an invite on the Pelican board and early911sregistry forums as well, if the initial turn out is light. I would prefer to see a cap on cars however, as the POC STS event there was very crowded.

All the TT guys c'mon!
Erik? Watch your mirrors... :D

Mr. Gagen, will your car be ready? You know the RSR..um 993...RS...er...what is it this week?...

Johnny Riz? Where are you?
Jae Lee, Dave Q? Time to shake out the cars...

Hope to see you all there!

Thanks for the advice. I have posted on OCR forum and sent emails to all regions in Zone 8 to put the info on their calendar. I will check out Pelican board and early911registry. We sweated break-even on March 14 DE and I know we need about 65 cars to break even at Fontana. We will discuss a maximum number of cars and get back to you.

Great track the infield was where I learned to left foot brake, like a big AX.
I'd like to shake down the RSR at this DE, wait n see. :D

I'm in, for sure! Trailer has been arranged, beer cooler for afterwards is getting repainted and re-insulated (haha!!), and I'm hoping the final mod's (Nope, I'm not tellin' what....)are done to the 911SC/RS for this showing.

Note to all: the surface is sooooo smooth on the infield that slightly used tires should be no problem. Of course, I'll be on a new set of shaved R-888's to try and chase down a certain "candy-bar" car. :burnout: "Argh! The curse of the Black-Pearl!"

Come on Big Track drivers. Let's go! And for those with lots of AX experience ready to step up to a slightly larger venue, this is the one.

Hey Mike: will you ever finish that thing?

Dan is right, the surface is glassy smooth. In fact some people have been known to leave with more rubber on their tires than when they arrived

For those of you wanting to step up to time trials, this is the PERFECT venue to get your taste of the track before making that transition. Not your typical Qualcomm parking lot DE and for all those who don't like to run at Qualcomm because of the loose asphalt and running too close to the person in front of you, Fontana the place to be.

We know that Dan Chambers is going to be testing and tuning some new pieces and we've got the paparazzi with all their hidden cameras that will be there too find out what's his secrets are and report back to us. I saw Mike Gagen's car at the body shop and saw him working on the car himself, so you KNOW he's going to need all the track time he can get to shake out the bugs and loose bolts from his car. :D

The DE team is going to try and get this up on Motorsports Reg. way ahead of time to give people the chance to sign up early especially if you have to make arrangements to take that Monday off from work. Conversely, we're going to cap this event at a certain number (we haven't decided what it's going to be yet), but it will fill up fast so make those arrangements now and look for the announcement when registration opens up.

PS: As a reminder, this is an "Away" DE, so the PCASDR trailer will not be making the trip up to Fontana. As a result, there will not be any water, soda, lunch or beer provided, so make arrangement with that in mind.

I'll probably attend. I know I keep saying I succesfully retired from driving back from the track every sunday, but.......maybe just this once...... (insert pic of me digging my fingernails into the top of the slippery slope here)

I'd really like to attend this, but I had a question about my missing passenger seat. My factory belts expired last year so I just removed my passenger seat.

I have 20+ auto-crosses under my belt with OCR, including two with SDR. I've also done two Qualcomm DE's with your group. With NASA, I've run two HPDE's at California Speedway.

Can I get one of the "officials" to allow me to run without an instructor? I also have a Zone 8 logbook signed off by Chuck Sharp and Tim Comeau.

Thanks!

The Avitts have inquired about bringing their motorhome up the night before and camping at the track. I'll check on Monday with track officials for those interested in that avenue and see what they say.

Will the course be running clockwise, or CCW? It almost looks like CCW on the drawing.
