RA1 Tires legal in 944 Spec

Postby mrondeau on Tue May 12, 2009 10:19 am

I pulled this off the NASA website.

Extension for using Toyo RA-1 for spec tire classes
April 1, 2009 7:06 AM — The National Auto Sport Association (NASA) announced today that rules in all spec tire classes will be changed effective immediately to allow the use of the both the Toyo R888 or the Toyo Proxes RA-1 until the end of the 2009 season. This change is being made in partnership with Toyo to better allow racers to use up remaining RA-1's they had on hand and ease the transition to the new R888 without racers having to replace tires before the end of their useful life. Rule updates will be completed shortly and posted to the main http://www.nasaproracing.com site.

Ditto! Anyone contact Bryan Shackelford? He offered a "group buy" discount a few years back that really helped. Maybe he'll do that again?

Making them legal does not make them available :banghead:

Toyo has stopped manufacturing them, apparently the dies have worn out and they will not replace them. The Toyo rep I talked with at the LBGP said that the R888 uses the same compound of rubber but different construction and obviously different tread.
The 944 SPEC tire may still be for sale but the 225/50/16 and 245/45/16 don't seem to be around at the major suppliers. :surr:

Greg

But if you find some, I am in too :burnout:

I just talked to Bryan at Toyos Only. I explained some of the issues and asked him for an email which I will post here when received.

They had 2 sets of 225/50/15, now down to 1 set

If you are going to Fontana they will be there with POC this weekend but will likely need the order soon

Plenty of brand new 225/50/15 RA1s out there but I notice the price increase is significant ($579 not mounted at Express Tire-they order from Toyo!) Can we do better? It takes a village.

Just paid $162 delivered to my home for 225/45-15's from Bryan at Toyos Only.
Get them mounted/balanced/old tire salvage fee for $15 at Evans Tire on Sports Arena (need to negotiate)

I just talked to Richard at Express Tire in San Marcos, 471-1733 and told him there were at least 5 of us wanting sets of 225/50/15 RA1's and he gave me an out the door price of $615. That is four tires mounted, balanced, taxes included. :D That is cheaper than the last 888's I bought! He said he could get them with a days notice. That sounds like the ticket to me.

If we are doing some sort of group buy. I might be able to get us a super deal on mounting balancing etc. We could have them all shipped to Autobahn then work out the details. Let me know.

Great idea Sean but, so far, the OTD price at express tire is cheaper than Shacklefords unmounted price... so that is the route I'll go unless...

Leigh, Sean and Jackie

I need 4 RA-1 tires right now before Fontana and one R888. Let me know if there is a group buy.

I'm sure Chuck needs tires too, as he was out of Toyos after Spring Mtn.
