I for one am glad to see a plain vanilla DE. After moving back to Calif from Dallas last year, I really miss the Maverick Region and its DE's. These were non-timed events that drew consistent number of participants. This was a heavy track-focused region where you could AX, DE or Race. I never heard one complaint about not having a TT. You can put a data acquisition system in or use and Ultra-Lap if you wanted time. We had 5 groups based on skill, with a variety of cars. You knew who was fastest in your group, and that is who you aspired to emulate or learn from. We had the ability of running in close to 8 PCA DE's a year in the DFW area.

I'd looked forward to moving back here, but what a disappointment in the lack of DE's. I joined POC too, as they seemed to do more track events. But, they are all time focused, it seems. STS, TT or racing. Heck, my little hot rod '84 Targa is Prepared V3 due to my poor choices in mods the last 7 years. I don't care about times, I just want to have fun at the track several times a year and improve my skills. I'll probably not renew POC next year. I will most likely do the SpeedVentures or similar events instead, as the focus is off competition and times. There is a market, in my opinion, for drivers such as myself that want to enjoy our cars and not get into competition.

I'm not into AX, as I like extended runs at speed like we get in DE's. I may try one at Qualcomm this year for a fix. I'm really glad that we have this event 6/15, and I hope we sneak another in this year.

Just my thoughts on this....

Actually, I think the San Diego region's TTs are pretty low-key. It's more like a bunch of friends (and new friends) getting together somewhere in the middle of the desert to tear-up tires and have some fun. For the majority of the weekend, the only difference between our TT's and a DE is that we have transponders on the cars, and the organizers (Jack and Robert) do a great job of posting the times (both on paper and later on the web). Some people even skip timed runs at the end of Sunday, but I like to do them to see if I can avoid slowing down under pressure  For most of us, the race is ultimately against ourselves (or is that, "the race is ultimately against death by rampant oxidation"?).

Try it. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the comraderie and collegial atmosphere.

Hi Ed,
If my 911 were ready I'd jump on this weekday DE too.
This track was were I first started to left foot brake.
Find one corner (or a few linked together) in the infield and practice some left foot braking.

I'm with you, just want to exercise my car.
The SDR TT series has been run very well by Robert and Jack for years.
There is that option to run Saturday only at these weekend TTs.
Saturday only entry is slightly discounted and track time is maximized.
Sometimes 6 - 30 minute sessions, tough to find a better deal than that.
Plus you can ride along with 911 intructors that have the tracks totally wired.
I know you would enjoy a low key Saturday on Streets of Willow during an SDR TT weekend.
You guys are in for an Awesome track day.
Best,
Mike

We have received requests for groups of people being together in the garages. No problem. As soon as the track gives us a garage assignment, we will assign garage numbers. The DE, CDI, Pre-reg, Tech, Safety and Equipment will all be together to aid in logistics.

Martin,

Your map of the garage area is great although the track entry is no longer as shown on the map. Entry is is further down the track near what is referred to as the playground. This was changed after the infield incident a few years ago.

Thanks Dave
Here is the track entrance map as assigned by the track. The Driver's meeting will be in front of garage 21 in G3.

I thought that it looked not quite right. This is probably a better map of the entrance.

Actually the entrance is down by the cross in your diagram. The cars are going slower and it's much safer.

Dave,
Martin had it right the first time. The entrance for the "infield road course only" is after the chicane and before "Bridge Straight". At least that's the way they've been running the infield for the past 2 years. Perhaps your referring to the Roval course entry? I know that was changed after that incident with the Carrera GT.

I've been there 4 times with Speed Ventures and POC within the last year and a half. No one entered on the straight after the chicane during these events. I would recommend not entering after the chicane. That is where the big accident happened 3 years ago. It's much safer coming onto the track down in the playground area.

Just my 2 cents.

Dave is right. I have driven the infield at least six days the last couple years and you do not want to enter by the chicane. Actually there is no chicane since it was just paved over. It's a straight. The entrance should be by what I know as turn 14-I think. :?

Well, I'll be open minded and look at this. I'm really looking forward to this one, in the meantime. I just went down and "dumped some money" on Jae Lee's desk for my raised spindles, re-valved shocks and fresh corner balance and alignment which was completed last night.....can't wait to try it out.

On a side note: This is the first time in 7 years that ANYONE besides me has worked on my baby. This includes all new suspension, interior, brake upgrade, engine rebuild, etc, etc.

I have a couple questions:
How much is it to rent a garage?
How much is the track tour 1 session ride cost? The event cost is $150 I would think the ride would be maybe $25-50?

Thanks!

Just an update on the garage building, garage numbers and track entry.

If you look at Martin's map, our garage building is "G3". Garage numbers are 1-40.

I spoke with the track today regarding the different "entry" points for the infield and varying opinions. The way I've run the infield in the past 2 years with BMWCCA is with the entry point where Martin posted it the first time. POC runs it with an entry point further down closest to the "King Taco" building.

Autoclub Speedway's official position is that it is safer "and highly encouraged" to enter at the point where Martin posted because the starter and driver about to enter the track can see down to the hairpin to look for oncoming traffic. Track exit is at the same hairpin (T-14), but this will all be explained at the driver's meeting on the day of the event.
