No cones, just K rail and some run-off areas.

Here is a solution for the longer session crowd.

20 Minute sessions (3 per hour)

27 sessions (9 hours - 8 until 5...no lunch break)

6 run groups

4 sessions each (The first session would be 30 minutes instead of 20)

23 drivers per group @$195

17 drivers per group @$265

The answer is neither! - and Both!

The track is made from a Navy airstrip. They use cones, k-rails and other barriers to define the track. It is the same track that has been used every year (in recent memory) for the vintage races. See the map post earlier in this thread. Also as said earlier, it consists of both asphalt and concrete mixed over the entire course. This "airstrip" type of course is how many early SCCA races were done before there were dedicated tracks.

If you run this, it is exactly what the vintage racers will run and it will be set up and managed by vintage race group that will manage the actual races the following days. :D

I'm in for either type sessions. Like the idea of the $195 price though.

To be in context with the surroundings I will consider a wing for my car ... and try to be on 3 wheels as much as possible.

When you consider no hotel, less abrasive track surface, gas to venue, weather, tradition, etc, I feel it is a great deal at either price.

Let us know the details as soon as possible. Can we share a car and run in several different groups? What are the safety requirements?

It would be run as a D.E. with the same requirements we just had at Fontana (8 AX days, fire extinguisher, 18 etc.)
It sounds like 23 drivers per group will not be a logistical problem, but the $195 price means we will need 138 to sign up.
The response to the poll leaves me very optimistic, but it is a board decision to make.

While $195 is a nice number from a psychological standpoint, there are various other combinations of numbers that work just as well.

22 drivers/group @ $200
20 drivers/group @ $220
18 drivers/group @ $250

And pretty much any other combination in between 90 and 138 drivers.
Personally, I think 20 driver/group (120 drivers max) at $225 sounds like a nice combination - $225 is quite a bit less than $295 and we split the difference between 17 and 23 drivers.
Just my $0.02. :)

For me, the traffic is part of the fun of a DE. So, for my $0.02, give me...
1) larger run groups,
2) more sessions,
3) and lowest prices.

Dan,

I looked at my lapping records and I run 12-13 laps in a 20 minute session.

In our groups we have 28-33 cars.

So, John, given your experience with the track, 30 car run groups, and our DEs, what are your thoughts on the optimal sizes of the run groups for us?

How may cars were in a run group at Fontana?

My guess would be 20-25 maybe a few more for this track.

It's a pretty safe track. The tire chicane at the turn 5 is one car at a time and it would be pretty hard to hit any K-rail other than coming onto the main straight if you over cook it, but I have seen most cars spin to the inside there and miss the K-rail. The rest of the track has lots of runoff.

Thanks, John.

Martin, sounds like 25+ cars per run group. 5 run groups with 5 20-minute sessions each. 40 minute lunch break.

By the way, it sounds like PCA has to absorb the risk of losing money. Perhaps, if allowed, non-PCAers should be asked to pay a premium, e.g. $200 for members, $220 for non-members.

is this an open exhaust event? if so i would be in for any session setup the club thinks is best.

to get more porsches we could ask the poc to join us. i will be happy to do that but who gives the ok at this point?

Thanks, John!

Hmm. Okay. Sounds fairly similar to our Big Track TT/DE events. Depending on when I grid I get between 12 and 14 laps per session. So, all things being equal, it sounds like a good call for us either way for run session duration. I'm guessing, but a 15-minute session would only hinder a run session by a reduction of one or two laps max.

Works for me. Let's do this!

Just a reminder that the purpose of this thread was to gauge reaction and interest level to such a possibility of running a DE at Coronado. Martin, Don and Jim have gotten us this far with the military and we're excited that they have given us the green flag. Just a few short months ago, we didn't think this would even be possible.

That being said, it's still a decision to be made by the board, not the DE chairs. We'll present the details to the board during next weeks meeting and see if it's approved.

Once again, we're asking the board to authorize a budget larger than they ever have for a DE. As everyone knows by now, the DE at Fontana went extremely well and the club made money on that event. A DE at Coronado will be more of a break even type event given the high $$$$ to run there, but it could be a once in a life time opportunity as the Coronado SpeedFest was almost canceled a year or so ago.

If the board approves this event, we're going to need to promote this to all regions to try to get our numbers up. Tell your friends/ family and anyone that has track experience and inviting the POC isn't a bad idea either. The fact that it's on a Thursday will be tough, but given that it's a unique opportunity and we're trying to keep the entry fee down, we believe it can work.

Finally, please note that IF the board approves this DE, the scheduled DE at Qualcomm for August 8th will be canceled for obvious reasons. Stay tuned... :beerchug:

The Vintage Event is open exhaust...so I imagine our DE would be also.
