December AX - bring friend/family for rides

The December AX is our 'other car' AX , 'non-competitive' and is for no points.

The AX team thought this AX could be an AX where perhaps friends and family could go for ride-alongs for a nominal entry fee to be donated to charity. The concept was presented to the board and the board approved of the concept provided friends/family rode with an INSTRUCTOR ONLY.

So, if you are already an instructor, you'll be able to invite your friends/family to ride with you and/or other instructors and their hot cars. (look out Tom Tweed(Ultima), Dave Gardner(mr. decals), Jad and Jim (hot painted car)- everyone will want a ride with you guys - with your permission of course)

If you are close to becoming an instructor (talk to Mark Rondeau, Chuck Sharp, Carl Scragg, Dan Chambers)BECOME AN INSTRUCTORand then friends/family can ride with you! Talk to them at the upcoming AX''s (September 13 next one) and get checked out/approved!

For non-instructors, invite friends/family and find an instructor that can take them.

Taste of the track entry fee will be very inexpensive. Price not set yet. We are looking into this more.

Uh-oh! Do I smell some 1st gear turns coming up. I hope not.
That last course was very safe and at reasonable speeds - maybe a repeat for December?

Kim - Repeating the course in December sounds like a good idea to me.
We'll change it a bit for a smoother swale crossing, we'll try to get some of the turns to be a more exact radius per the track map, maybe straighten out the straight a bit too.

Sounds like we should caution the friends and familty ride-along participants to eat only bananas for breakfast. They taste the same whether going down, or coming up

As to bananas for breakfast, I think you should have them eat whatever binds their bowels up - it's not so tough to point your face out the window, but the alternative?

Andy - Insurance will cover it. Our club rules allow it, board has approved it. We'll put out an official notice later with more details.
The announcement is made now so that folks who are not INSTRUCTORS yet can see the CDI's and get checked out for instructing. Then as INSTRUCTORS they can take passengers. So.... if you can become an INSTRUCTOR and want to take your friends/family in December - get checked out ASAP.

Andy brings up a good point. Some clarification is needed here.

Per the 2009 Zone 8 Rules, a "Taste of the Track" program is for "participants" - "The participant will register for the event, pay an entrance fee, and sign the insurance waiver. The Event Chairperson must approve all participants and instructors for this program."
In paragraph "C" preceding this, it states:
"Participants must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid state driver's license, and be in good mental and physical health. For Autocross only, 16 and 17 year olds may participate according to the rules of the Junior Participation Program."
The Zone 8 Rules go on to state that for a "Track Tour" - "There is no age restriction for passengers." There is no such exemption mentioned for the "Taste of the Track".
My reading of all this is that for the full-speed "Taste of the Track" the riders must meet the normal standard for full participants - i.e., over 18 or 16-17 with the JPP rules in effect.
The PCA National site has a "Taste of the Track" form, which includes the following requirements (my highlight):
• Be at least eighteen years of age
• Sign all appropriate insurance and track waivers
• Complete appropriate entry form including payment of entry fee
• Attend activities as a Novice student, such as a Drivers’ Meeting, a Novice classroom, and flagging session, if applicable
• Wear an approved helmet
• Clothing must comply with the Regional rules for Novice driving entrants

I think we could include 16-17 year olds who fall within the JPP Rules, since this is an Autocross, and the Taste of the Track program documents on the National web site were aimed more at DE events. However, the JPP rules are quite strict, and there is even a FAQ that spells the following out very explicitly:
* The 16-17 year old must be a CHILD of a current, active PCA Member (no friends, nieces, nephews, etc.)
* At least one Parent of the 16-17 year old must be present throughout the event
* Even if separated or divorced, BOTH parents MUST sign the JPP participation waiver (not just our junior spectator waiver)

(my neighbor's son will have to wait a couple of years - oh well).

Maybe I'm not putting two and two together, but it appears to me that there is another interpretation. "Taste of the Track" is for participants, and clearly anyone wanting to participate (read: drive) needs to have a driver's license. Then there's the "Track Tour", for which there is clearly no age restriction.

Why not consider this a "Track Tour" so that folks can put their young-uns in the passenger seat to see what all the fun is about?
