Photo Police

Postby John Straub on Sun Dec 20, 2009 10:31 am

Hey...I have a question for you hi-tech guys.

If I was going to scan a photo for reprint, what would be the best finish on the orginal photo to scan off of, glossy, lustre or matte?

Thanks,
John

John- I definitely would go with the glossy. Although the megapixels that created each print would be the same, most scanners pick up the image and the coloration from a flat surface more effectively than from a matte, semigloss, etc. They all make could original prints, but on my HP PROFESSIONAL PRINTER the scans from my HP SCANNER seem to always be sharper and more exact as to original coloration from a glossy print than the others. Good Luck- Rich Fatuzzo :D

John,
As long as you use a decent scanner, and the print you are scanning is good, go with the glossy. Less refraction for the scanner to deal with, therefore better sharpness and more accurate color "reading".

By the way, the reproduced, or second generation (from the scan) photo will likely be better if printed on a lustre paper for entirely different reasons. :D
