PCA Instructor dies in fatal crash at CMP

Don Morris, PCA Metrolina Director, has confirmed there was an incident during the 07MAR PCA Driver’s Ed at Carolina Motorsports Park that resulted in a fatality.

The vehicle in which Tom Norby was instructing went off track and impacted a tree. Fire/Rescue and EMT responded immediately, however Tom died of his injuries at the scene.

Tom was a Carolinas Region PCA member and served as a Driver's Ed Instructor, having completed the PCA National Driver's Education Instructor training. He was 58.

This is a difficult time for everyone, especially Tom’s family. Please keep Tom's wife Paula and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Here is something I found on another forum with additional details on the accident.

Safety equipment had nothing to do with this tragedy. A water cooled 996 several cars if front of them blew a hose clamp and dropped radiator fluids all over the track at the entrance to T9. The driver had no way of knowing the hazard was there and went flying off the track, flipped, and hit numerous trees. The instructor, like the driver, was wearing a Hans device and 5/6 point harness with race seats. A tree branch penetrated the car and killed him instantly while the driver walked away unscathed physically.
