New 911 Carrera GTS

Porsche Cars North America announced today that the new, 408-horsepower, 2011 911 Carrera GTS will go on sale in the U.S. in early 2011 in coupe or cabriolet body styles. Base pricing starts at $104,050 for the coupe and $113,850 for the cab. The car will get its public unveiling at the Paris Motor Show in early October.

The new Carrera model narrows the gap between the Carrera S and the 435 hp 911 GT3, Porsche said in a release.

The rear-wheel-drive, GTS uses the 44mm-wider Carrera 4 body of the AWD models, with the wider rear track and wheels. The naturally aspirated 3.8-liter flat-six engine has 23 hp more than the Carrera S, which is provided by a special resonance intake manifold that uses six vacuum-controlled tuning flaps that switch between power and torque-optimized geometry, Porsche said. The Carrera S has only one tuning flap. The multiple tuning flaps also give the GTS more torque in the mid-rev range. Peak torque of 310 foot-pounds is unchanged from the Carrera S, but it kicks in at 4,200 rpm or 200 rpm earlier.

And thanks to “Porsche Intelligent Performance,” the GTS has the same EPA fuel-economy ratings as the Carrera S: 19 mpg city, 27 highway.

Other GTS design separators include 19-inch center-mount RS Spyder wheels, painted black, with high-gloss rim flanges and 305/30 R 19 tires on the rear axle. The sport exhaust system has two dual-tipped pipes with their outer shells painted black with polished inner tubes.

Appearance modifications include a SportDesign front apron with black spoiler edge, special sideskirts in black and the Carrera GTS logo on doors and rear lid in black or silver depending on the body color. The area between the two tailpipes in the rear is also black.

The standard interior color is “black Alcantara.” The center sections of the sport seats are covered with the suede-like material and it is applied just about everywhere the driver and passenger will touch, including the rim of the new three-spoke SportDesign steering wheel, shifter knob and handbrake lever.

The standard transmission is a six-speed manual and the seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) is optional, $4,320 ($4,080 + $240 for required shift paddles).

MSRP pricing noted above includes the $950 freight charge from Germany. The Sport Chrono Package Plus is $960.

GTS Coupe Performance

Top track speed: 190 mph (2 mph more than the Carrera S)

0-60 mph: 4 seconds, with PDK and Sport Chrono Package Plus

Now that would be a fun car to drive on the street, better than S but not as harsh as GT3.......993's rule though....even if it is just in our minds :)
